Question CD-R or CD-cRap

Ok Three months ago I bought a Opti-rite 40x12x40 CDr for my new rig it worked great. Now two weeks ago it started to act up it would eject the cd before burning and would not respond to the eject button (so I could put a new cd in) until I rebooted, and would not burn at 40x only 32x. Needless to say I defragged my system but to no avail. I did get to work sometimes. One week ago it no longer liked my K-hypermedia blanks but still worked with a couple of noname blank disks I had laying around. Now it won't read or write anything. I have exhausted all my knowledge of CD-Rs. Maybe you can help. Should I put it to rest or am I missing something?

Try testing it out in someone elses computer... that usually is pretty informative.

Test the burner in another computer to make sure its not your system being the arsehole here
Buy a burner for temporary testing then;
attempt the new burner in your system, if it works, RMA your old burner

I agree with Tom. If that's not an option, try the obvious stuff: virus scan, unplug and replug the power & IDE connectors, uninstall & reinstall from Device Manager (making sure you have the latest drivers), etc.

At least it's one of the cheapest components to replace, if it comes to that. Check the weekly flyers for BestBuy, OfficeMax, Circuit City, and others; generally once a month they have CD burners for $20-$30 after rebate.
