Default Question about RAM...

I now have a DDR 333 supportive motherboard, and I want to get some new ram to replace my aging DDR266 RAM. My question is, If I pick up two 256 sitcks of DDR 333, and move my remaining stick of 266 over to slot 3, will the DDR333 still be running at 333 mhz, or will it be bound to 266 because of the old RAM?

im not completetly sure, but im 90% sure it will all go to 266. Unless u have something special onboard im not aware of, ur stuck at 266. U could send it to me...i could use another stick of 2100...im runnin 256 of that currently

Each bank would need to have it's own controller for you to use DDR266 and DDR333 at the same time without the 333 running at 266.

Dude, there is no such thing as duel DDR memory controlers.

Besides, your missing something.

It isn't the speed of the RAm the decides how fast it will go.

It is what you have your FSB and Memory settings running at, and if your RAM can handle them.

Mixed RAM is bad mojo.

If you try and mix those two, you will have problems.

Let's say you have an XP2200+ which has a default FSB of 133mhz. You would have to set the FSB to 133, the DRAM to SPD or 133mhz, and your new RAM would be hamb-strung at 266 DDR. You could also have memory timing issues causing instability.

Lets say you had a new XP2700+ with a default FSB of 166mhz.

If you mixed the RAM, you would have to set your RAM to a -33mhz setting and still have the same RAM speed and problems as before.

The best rules I can give you for RAM are;

Buy the biggest, best, single module of DRAM you can afford.
(Unless your running an NForce board, then by two match Modules of the best you can afford).

Remind me about that in about a month ungaramax...

Icpiper, are you saying that buying one BIG module is better than buying 2 smaller ones?

unless you have an Nforce board, then yes 1 large is much better than two small.
