Default Whao this isn't cool

Well guys i have an issue (wow its been a long time since i've had an actual computer issue lol) I think my PSU is gone but i'm not sure. I disconnected everything to organize wires and when i hooked everything back up to the motherboard, Stuff turned on for like a seconded and then shut off. Kinda like you would see a capacitor discharging.Everything is hooked up correctly. But it won't start. Is this a PSU symptom or my stupidity in connecting my rig up. My motherboard's manual isn't very clear on how stuff is supposed to connected. Now that i look at it.. it seems like there is a short somewhere but i'm not sure. I need insight
Thanks guys
Sk8

This can happen if the PWR_GOOD signal isn't asserted within the allowable timeframe. Most likely this is due to a short somewhere--check to make sure no wires are crossed, and the motherboard isn't grounding out on the case. Reseat all cards, processors, and memory sticks.

If you have the time, take the mobo out of the case (this will eliminate a bad mobo ground as a possible suspect) and with just a vidcard inserted (of course, RAM, CPU/HSF, PSU & drives connected) with the mobo placed on a cardboard box (i.e. your mobo box), see if it'll boot up. If so, then there was a short having something to do with the mounting of the mobo in the case. If not, do you see a power-on light on the mobo? Do you hear any error beeps? Or is it totally dead?

totally dead.. this is a weakass ECS k7s5a so i don't have a power-on light. A couple of minutes ago stuff would start up for a second and then shut off.. now everything is totally dead. I'll try the cardboard box thing when i get home from work. this is really upsetting i feel like a total noob right now lol

here is my plan.. i'm going to take everything out of my case and then rebuild it. that is the only solution i can think of right now. I haven't tried the other PSU idea because i don't have another PSU that fits my mobo sooooooooo i'm going to try that. If that doesn't work then i guess i'm going to look for a new PSU

Who remembers which pins to short on the mobo connector in order to power it up without being connected to anything else ?

This could really help him check the PSU quickly and pretty painlessly.

Edit: BTW, it can be pretty easy to connect the laed and switch wires to the mobo header wrong. If a guy ran an LED wire and accidently got it connected to two "Hot" pins on the header, well, I bet the mobo wouldn't like that at all. The only questions is which would stop working first, the PSU, the Mobo, or the LED.

This is a silly suggestion, but have you checked the voltage switch on the back to make sure it's set for you AC input.

Well.. I got a PSU and it works.. Now here is my problem. I start the computer.. and i get no post. everything else turns on (i.e. fans and the keyboard lights light up for a second.) But nothing shows up on the monitor and if i try to turn on caps or something nothing happens. I can't even turn the computer off with the switch. I need a solution... throw one at me

Sk8

Edit: forgot to mention that it is a 250 watts psu. Could that be it?

You can't be serious. If you are not, that was pretty funny. If you were, have you ever heard of a computer called "Apple"?

Akita, unforunately i am.. The guy i live across the street from said he had a 300 watts PSU laying around his store (odd thing is he's blind, his cousin does all the technical stuff) and he gave it to me.. but.. its not 300 its 250. I think i'm just gunna order a 480 watt off newegg (damn i hate this laptop)

Good call, Sk8. Get a good psu, you can use it in the future with other mods. Processor and ram technology advances quickly, but if you get a good PSU it will last you through several upgrades.

Sk8, I just saw in another thread that you are using toggle swithes for power and reset. That is the wrong type of switch. The switches you need to use are momentary switches. The contacts are only closed when you push the button and open when you let go.
