Default Best Hard Drive Manufacturer

this might have been done before, but if it was, i sure cant find it, so heres a new one, because i am terribly curious...

we use Seagate drives exclusively at my work, the only drives that seem to work great out of the package, and arent returned days later (like the Toshibas we had before, Deskstars)...havent seen a Seagate fail yet at work, and we sell alot of em...

guess it depends on what you're looking for.

western digital has the 10k raptors
maxtor has the diamondmax 10 which are almost as fast as the raptors
seagate has been dependable and have a hefty 5 year warranty.

so far i've gone with seagate since dell sells them for cheap. the western digital 7200 rpm ones i have have a wierd whining sound to them.
if i get enough cash i'll probably get a couple of 300 gig maxtors for the 16mb cache though other companies are starting to make 16mb cache ones

it surprises the hell out of me that no other manufacturer hasnt stepped up to WD in the 10,000 rpm field, drives of that speed have existed for SCSI since forever, i would figure engineering them to work on SATA interface couldnt be THAT hard, so what gives?

EDIT:aight whoever voted for "other" needs to show themselves, and reveal this "other" manufacturer that i didnt mention (one that still exists or hasnt been acquired by a company already on the list)...

I've used Maxtor, WD, and Seagate. I'll always buy Seagate for their consistent dependability. WD and Maxtor seem to either crap out within a year or last for an eternity. Not a chance I'm willing to take. I will never buy another Maxtor drive in my life. WD is a possibility, but not likely.

I have WD 160 _mb_ HDD's with 3.1 on them that still work. I have a Seagate 40 _mb_ that still works. You do the math.

I personally have a Western Digital 75gig 10k Raptor drive, and i live it. I have had no problems, it is super fast, and not very loud at all.

I used to swear by Quantum, till Maxtor picked them up.
My first 2 Maxtor drives died a horrible death.

One WD died, but lasted over 2 years.

I've been using Seagate since, and they're great.

Seagate and WD get my votes.

I used all manufacturers in PCs - just depends on whats the best deal at the time.

I use Seagates exclusively in my builds for "businesses" - they really like the idea of the 5 year warranty. They cost a few bucks more but this is a great selling point. No bad ones yet but were talking 5 drives compared to the 100 or so other brands Ive used.

I use Maxtors in my cheapy computers. They are always on sale at Newegg and when your trying to hit a sub-$500 price point, $8 cheaper drive will get you there. I have not replaced one due to failure but the other day I got a bad one right out of the box, new. Made a beeping noise and failed at the BIOS.....1 bad drive isnt a biggie in my book. I use ALOT of these drives.

Western Digital is the manufacturer in my personal PCs. No reason I guess except at the time they were the best value for the money. In my main PC I run a Raptor - they are the only manufacturer that make a 10K sata drive and it also has that really nice 5 year warranty. In my server PC I run 3 - 200 GB WDs. In my media PC/DVD Ripper I have a 80 GB WD. I have had only one problem with a WD drive. I had a 160 GB WD drive in my main PC before and it started CRC erroring - I got the data off and RMAd it. It was about a year old. They replaced it without issue. I also vaugley (sp?) remember an older 1 GB drive I had problems with in the 90s - I think it may have been a WD but Im not really sure - either that or a Maxtor.

Every manufacturer can have a bad run of drives, it happens. When you have alot of PCs run through your hands like most of us do you can get a jaded view of one manufactuer over another. All of them make good drives just depends on its use and what you want to spend.

Warranty - goes to Seagate
Price - goes to Maxtor (based on Newegg)
Speed - WD (till someone else makes a 10k sata drive)

I've got over 250 WD drives at work, have returned 3 in the last 2 years. the 200 Maxtor drives I've got are running at about 60% failure rate...in other words,3 out of every 5 I got I've had to return for RMA.

We've just recently switched to Seagate, now that they offer a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY on their drives...we'll see how they hold up...they seem pretty good with their SCSI drives, but it remains to be seen how these IDE's perform...good poll fu3l

HAd to go with WD i have not built alot or used alot of computers but i had a Seagate it died no warning, have heard mixed things about Maxtors ,with that argument i cant go with em seems to iffy. The two WD i have had and still using are quiet and i have had no troubles with them what so ever.

I seemed to have missed some thing??? Where did the world stop and all the SCSI drives fall off??? I didn't see 1 post about SCSI interface HDD's ...SATA could be argued that it is SCSI (some of the faster SATA drives are basically SCSI frames with the SATA interface/controller) But not 1 single post about SCSI reliability? Why is that?

Seagate gets my vote for SCSI...I don't care what interface..Cheetah's are the best (opinion)

If I had to make a choice on ATA drives.......I have had both good luck and bad luck with both WD and Seagate....Maxtor is not even an option...nor IBM, or Hitachi, Quantum, Toshiba, Connor, ......

yea I know some of those have been bought up by larger companies....but just checking if you were paying attention

Seagate is the HD for me. They were all we ever used at Intel and I love using them at home. So silent and easy to use. As for WD, they're loud and annoying, not the new ones of course.

But, Seagate wins w/ their awesome Warranty, Sound Shield, blah blah blah.

WD for me, though Seagate and Maxtor are also good. Basicly, anything but IBM Deathstars-er Deskstars.

It should go without saying that Seagate is the ONLY choice for SCSI drives.
