Default F$@#$#$ Maxtor Harddrives!!!

So I acquired a Maxtor 40gb DiamondMax 7200 rpm drive a while back, well I fired it up today doing a normal scheduled server restart and now it has a corrupt file table, and get this, the warranty ends on November 1, 2004. Ain't that some sh*t?

So, are there any disk utilities out there that can save this drive? I'm not worried too much about data anymore, as I backed it up over the weekend (thank god)

Eh, atleast it isn't a 30GB IBM Deathstar that had priceless family videos on it that died. Good thing I do regular backups.

Email Maxtor with a good BA attitude and they will most likely do something for you

So....are you saying that there is NO way to fix this? Not like I paid for it, it was a system pull I found.

If the warranty ends today, that means midnight tonight..Call them, tell them your story, and they will likely work with you to replace it..

Better yet, hit their website to do the online RMA. Once you get the approval code you have around a week to get it mailed in to them.

I've never really liked maxtors...Seagate and WD are the bestEST hard drives. Glad you had your stuff backed up J-dogg. G'luck on getting the RMA!

Dude, just go here:

https://www4.maxtor.com/en/support/service/rma/create/

Why email them when you can just get the authorization?

Jesse, Maxtor's are actually considered the best drives by many people.

Well it seems the thing isn't under warranty anymore, infact it expired Oct. 30 2004. Two days ago. Go figure.

BA everytime you call her Jesse I think you're talking to me sometimes because that's my name in real life

I guess it all depends on what crowd you're in, down here it's the complete opposite.
WD S.E.'s, and Seagate SATA's prosper here with no failures whatsoever.

Maxtor by far has had the highest failure rate, based on my personal experience in addition to what I hear.

Agreed TekX, when I did my short stint in PC repair I can't count how many Maxtor HDD's I ended up pulling from computers, I have seen Maxtor 80 and 100gb HDD's still under warranty fail here, in like the first 6 months of operation. Maybe it's all the humidity....

With me it's always been the WD's that die. I haven't messed with enough Seagates to form an opinion for or against.

Lol I pretty much go off of what my dad suggests at the moment because I haven't had enough experience with brands to know as of yet. So my dad had pretty bad moments with maxtor, and I've just gone with that.

I favor Seagate in most situations, but I've started to lean towards WD because of the Raptors (many others here have as well). If Seagate did a 10,000 rpm SATA I would have bought it by now
