| I have read many findings that RAID will not speed up disk access, in some cases it actually slows it down. That and the possible configuration headaches with setting up and maintainin a RAID array I would go with the bigger drive. RAID has no "real" beneift unless were talking huge files........plus the Raptor is plenty quick enough by itself. The second gen 74 GB Raptor is actually quicker then the 36 GB model in the testing Ive seen. | ||

| Yeah i agree not get the 36Gb raptors theyre a fair amount slower then then 2nd gen rapotors and Raid does almost nothing for them. 74Gb raptors have been slightly better in Raid but unless this is a server the unreliability isnt really worth the tiny speed jump youll get. | ||

| As far as raid goes, Raid 0 is faster than 1 normal drive, but this only applys to reading and possibly seeking. Its takes longer to write in any raid configuration, but the boost in performance I can deffinitly say from first hand experience is noticable. Raid 1 is super slow, probably slower than just one drive. In raid 1 everything has parrity which means everything you write is written twice. Its mainly used in highend server sytems that can't afford to have data loss. Also just a reminder, 2 36gb raptors is only gonna give you 36gb' in raid config not 72gb. Because it uses the space on both drives to store bits and pieces of the same data. Hope this helps. | ||
