Defragging is bad for your hard drives. Who said that?

I remember hearing it here once or twice before and the person in question had run several tests on effect on performance over time that excessive defragging can have... i need more info.

There is a guy complaining about decreased PC performance decrease and he brags about runnning spybot and ad-aware daily and defragging weekly... that seems excessive.

Defragmenting your HDD can only reduce performance.

It's a great idea, but in the real world defragmenting is a waste of time and possibly performance.

Never defrag, and run Anti-Spyware applications at least once a week if you use IE, every other if you use FireFox/Opera in conjunction with "Immunity" in S&D, and run a solid firewall. And AntiVirus is for idiots.

I have always seen a noticable difference right after I defrag my drives.

Unless youre on a 3 year old install and have never defragged you probably will not notice a performace difference except in large files transfers especially over the network or if you have massive drives maybe slightly faster load/install times.

OMFG I know, I have the same issues with a person I know down the street, omfg we don't live in the Windows 3.1 days people!! This is the 21'st century, complete with 3ghz processors and more stable OS'es (by comparison). Get with the times!!
