i have installed xp on a hard drive and when i put the hdd in a different computer (the one i want it in) when it attempted to boot it said hard disc drive fail.

any suggestions why??

The hard drive failed would be my guess - go to the drive manufacturers web site and download some diagnostic tools. Run them and see what they have to say.

Maybe check the boot order while your at it. Could be cables as well - try swapping the cable out.

BTW, installing XP on one comp and then moving the HDD to another comp won't work.

I agree but it still shouldnt say hard disk failure - you should get the black screen with white text where Windows XP is asking you "What the hell do you think your doing"

now how is that? i have moved hard drives and they have all worked fine. although i did have to re register the os.

Well it depends, if the mobo has the same chipset and everything is close to being identical then it should work.

Why not just installing XP with the HDD in the comp you want it in?

i got that error before go into the bios and check the boot order or boot sequence and make sure that the hdd is listed as a boot it may list it as ide0 or ide1
