Default I was given this today...

Heres what a buddy of mine at work just threw my way because he couldnt get drivers for it....funny enough, the drivers are readily available from Adaptecs website and the thing retails for nearly $400 at most online retailers...

Adaptec 2100S SCSI RAID Controller with 32MB Cache

im fully aware it is a scsi controller, and i inherited an 18 gig 10,000 rpm Maxtor ATLAS 10k III from the office, unfortunately, i have no SCSI 3 68 pin cable to top it off...

my question is this...

just what is this thing capable of to justify the humongous price tag, i know scsi hardware is expensive by nature, but just how much better will something like the ATLAS 10k rpm hooked up to this be compared to...say...a raptor 10k rpm?

only asking because i have little / no hands on experience with SCSI devices...

That will give you better seek times but the raptor will feel a lot faster from what I have read.

you serious? SATA vs SCSI? doesent the controller have alot to do with performance?

also, if anyone can answer this, the "cpu" in the middle of the board has Intel etched into it, am i wrong in assuming its a bonafide X86 based CISC CPU?

the ram is PC100 CAS2 ECC 32MB 168 Pin SDRAM, upgradable to 128, do i need a special kind of ram or something to use in this? does it have to be ECC or CAS2???

EDIT: and if the cpu is, in fact, a genuine full blown cpu, would i be in my right mind to put some cooling on it, like a chipset or gpu cooler?

Well, the fact that you can diasy chain up to I think 14 SCSI devices off of one controller card, you make make a huge @$$ disk array...

I read an article in Maximum PC that compared scsi to the raptor. Thats what it said if it's true I have no clue. I will try to find it and tell you what it said.
