| Hey, people. New here. Get used to it. On to the point... I have an Intel Slot 1 motherboard and a 266mghz Pentium II, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for something creative to do with it. Can't do an HTPC because I don't need one, and I don't really need a fileserver either. Not yet, anyway. (I tried making one using Mandrake Linux but Mandrake didn't seem to feel like cooperating; I might try Suse at some point). So - any ideas? | ||

| First, welcome to PR! As for the PC, toss it, or donate it. I had 4 computers sitting in my garage from 200 to 400Mhz that I had to toss because no one wanted them. You could however turn it into a router, web PC, file server, protein folding PC, or give it to a sibling/child. | ||

| Donating it sounds like not a bad idea. Trouble is, there's no case - it's a motherboard, processor and hard drive sitting in a box. I'll hang onto it for a while, and it'll be Judgement Day for it when I get my next computer... which is hopefully soon. (I'm currently using a 1.2ghz Celeron Gateway OEM; long story). | ||

Eh, don't really need any of those. That's basically what I'm using now...
Your postcount tells me all I need to know on that topic.
Haha. It may have a small amount of nostalgic value, which may be why I've kept it for so long, but we shall see...
No worries. I knew all of those things coming in; I've seen too many boards where just about anything is tolerated and this isn't one of them; it's done right. (I've been lurking on and off for a while). Apologies if I came across as an ignorant fool, because I'm proud to consider myself not a member of that group. I'd rather not make my first day be the "I love the smell of napalm in the morning..." scene from Apocalypse Now.

Thank you, Akita and godfoot, and to everyone who has welcomed me thus far as well. I tried making it into a Freesco router a while back but Windows XP didn't seem to like it much, and without any fans that PII got hot - too hot to touch. (there were no case fans and I'm working with a passive heatsink, from what I can dig up these SECC cartridges are a pain with heatsink removal). Slap in an ATA100 drive and it'd make a great little file server - plenty of cache and that mobo's got UDMA 5 - but RAM is lacking. I've got some I could rip out of another machine in the basement, though. Would it be possible to turn it into a TiVo-like device? Now that I might be able to use.
