Default Hard Drive not showing up??

Ok, I have a customers HDD plugged into my rig, set as secondary slave that appears in the Windows device manager ( I am running XP) but it will not show up in My Computer meaning I can not put files onto it.

the mentioned drive has Windows 98 on it and boots fine, but why wont the drive show in my comp? I thought XP had no problems with FAT32.

go into disk mangler and check to see if the secondary drive is initialized, if it is not, do so.

also check your jumpers, if the drive is set to cable select change it to slave, this is actually the preferred method of initializing a drive

sometimes deleting the ide controller and rebooting can help as well, when the controller reinstalls it will detect the drives and they should show up

and you are right, being fat32 should not cause a problem, remember xp can see floppy files just fine and they are fat.

if these suggestions dont work lemme know and we can try a different avenue

cr(w)indows on occasion does ignore BIOS completly especially when disabling ide channels or sound/video. Just check through your bios settings or try replacing a cd/dvd drive with the drive and see if it picks up. Also make sure that device manager is detecting both channels on the IDE aswell.
