Question Fix a dead hard drive?

Is it possible to fix a dead hard drive? I dont know exactly whats wrong with it but when I hooked it up my computer wouldnt boot...wouldnt even turn on. So i used a junk power supply and hooked it up and damn if it didnt melt the red wire on the plug. Im not sure what that means. It is a Seagate 80GB SATA hd.

Anyone know if this is repairable before I take the time to take it apart?

There's always the freezer trick...place the HD in a tightly sealed plastic ziplock bag, and stick it in the freezer. Let it sit there for a while, then take it out, and there's a small chance that might fix it.
I heard of more ways, lemme find them.....
Edit: Here's an interesting way how someone fixed their dead hard drive

That may fix a platter that won't turn...... but prolly not the fried wire. Good luck!

Ok here is exctly what I did.

I hooked up the power to the hard drive using the SATA connector. It only goes on one way.

I power up the power supply and the red wire on the SATA connector starts to melt.

I power off the power supply.

Hard drive worked prior to this. I even tried a different power supply and SATA connector with the same result.

If it is still under warranty, I'd RMA the sucker.

You could find that same exact drive with a working logic board and try a board swap. Ive heard of it working. You could try that.
