Default SATA HDD for OS?

Can I run XP off of an SATA HDD? Are there any advantages in doing that?

yeah, you just need to get the sata drivers on a floppy so that when you boot from the winxp cd it can detect the sata drive. you also need to change the boot order in the bios to the sata drive, it was listed under scsi on my mobo, might be different on yours.

your boot times and access times will be better.

Yeah, have the SATA floppy that came with your Mobo, and when you're installing windows, it'll say "Press F6 to install RAID or SCSI Controllers" (or something to that extent) and that's your cue. Then follow the regular install procedure.

And yes, faster boot times and access times, those are the biggest benefits, as well as SATA being easier to manage inside of a case.

If you are going to run a OS on it's own drive, SATA or RAID 0 is the way to go....been doing that for a while now and dont think i am going to go back to PATA anytime here soon....

I believe they are stats on his car.

I use a raptor SATA driver for a boot drive. Best move I ever made. Windows boots very quickly and is very responsive. I have a board that does not require me to mess with loading drivers when installing an operating system. I believe any board with the Intel ICH5 chipset supports SATA natively on the board - no driver fiddling. This will do you no good if you are an AMD fan though - if you use Intel I suggest sticking with this chipset just for ease of use alone.

Sadly when I got my mobo it didn't come with a floppy with the SATA driver, so I had to go pull it off the CD and put it on a floppy.

SATA was also the best choice of hard drive for me. Not only is it faster but the wiring is sooo much simpler because of the smaller cables.
