Default What to do with 2 dead PSUs

Well I got 2 dead PSUs, and I don't know what other use I could make of them other than taking the fans out. Is it possible to take them out, hook the wires onto fan pins and into a molex that could be plugged into the motherboard?

I used to have an old dead 145watt powersupply. I decided to strip it for parts so i took the fan out. I noticed that it used the same plug as my video card, so i glued it on there. It covers practically my whole video card and cools like a dream. I overclocked its core 100mhz and memory 123mhz with no problems.

Is it possible to cut the fan's wires from the psu board and solder the wires onto pins? Is there a place you can buy these so they can be used as a common fan?

Digikey.com has the connectors you need. Or you could just buy some fan extensions or 3-4 pin or vise-versa adaptors and cut em up and wire them together.

Good idea Tycoon, I'm a total noob at modding cards but I'll give it a shot sooner or later.

Also, how do I make sure theyre dead? Both PSUs obviously don't power any computer, but cause the fans in the case to "twitch" for a split second once in a while.

If they twitch, that means that they are partially working but they are also partially dead. Personally, I wouldn't risk something as dangerous as taking apart a PSU, repair it, and trust it enough to place back into your computer. Buy a new one and salvage them for the fans and heatsinks.

Or.....

You do live in Pennsylvania...ever hear of curling?

Nope. I'm guessing that's something they do in the farming regions.

Well when you do decide to strip them out, cut off the wiring harness and tuck it away. The molexes and wire itself come in handy on future projects.

Assuming they are ATX, PSU's connect the #13(black wire) and #14(green wire) pins with a paperclip.
Make sure you have a load on the molexes like fans or something then turn on the PSU's. They might still be OK.
