Default Modem help on a co-worker's laptop

A co-worker of mine who I work morning shift with came to me with the weirdest problem I have seen in a while on her Systemax laptop. Specs are as follows:

P4 3.0 HT
512MB DDR400
DVD / CD-RW
XP Home i think, could be Pro, she wasn't sure.

Their ISP is earthlink and they are on dial-up. When it goes to dial the number, it first dials 000-0000 then the second time it dials her home phone number. Earthlink tried to walk her through it but they no-speak English good So I told her 'Since I can't figure out what's wrong with it, I'll ask a few people who probably do.'

It also says something about a line interference with her connection, I'm assuming that's resulting from the laptop trying to dial out her home-phone number.

Any ideas?

Did you try smacking the comp? Workes sometimes...

i would look into getting latest modem drivers for start, then play in your Internet connection settings and see if it has any config problems.

Modems are tricky. My dad still uses one....refuses to go wifi. But anyway on that note make sure there is no 3rd party software installed. Alot of modems come with software that let you fax etc. It may be conflicting with earthlink thus causing the wrong numbers to be dialed.
