Default PSU Questions

Here is the situation..

I am planning on upgrading my current system to a P4, 3g, 800mb FSB. The system will have 512 DDR, 3200 RAM, an ATI 9600 card, SB Live card, an additional USB PCI card, a CD-RW and a DvD-Rom drives, a 40 and a 200g HDD, and four case fans for the new case that I am looking at. My current system has a 350w PSU and I am thinking I may need a 400w PSU.

From looking at the projected system, will my assumptions be correct on needing the 400w PSU, or can I get away with just using the 350w PSU?

Thanks - K'pelli

When you say "tops," do you mean it is "top of the line," or that you have it pegged with a similar setup??

I recently purchased a PCPower&Cooling 510 turbo dlx.
Couldn't be happier. Of all the PSU's I've owned this one takes
the cake. Rock steady adjustable rails, spot on voltages and
fluxuation that is damnear nill. 5year Warentee for the best in the business...
I highly recomend one.

I killed a 320W PSU with a similar configuration, so I wouldn't advise pushing it. You can check it with the PSU calculator. My guess is it wil tell you you need around 370-390W minimum, so go for at least 450W. This should keep up with the setup you describe, as well as give you some headroom for future upgrades.

Not to mention hard to locate in the US.

PC Power and Cooling is the true "Tops" PSU but HEFTY price tag along with weight (200+ bucks).

Now here's my question.. what is your current PSU manufacturer? If it's a name brand, then you can probably get by easily enough. If not I'd try to find the middle ground and go with an Antec or Enermax.

I believe the current PSU manufacturer is an Antec. But I would have to check when I get home to be sure. (puter was a X-mas gift)

Just for comparison i have an Antec true power 550 watt PSU, cost a hundred bones last time i checked and i have the below mentioned rig plus 3 120mm case fans, 4 cathodes and a partarige in a pear tree. the voltages never dip, and are all above spec. but would give my left nut for a PcP&C PSU!!

Most of us would, Chrome. But then again, when you're on a budget and given the choice between $200+ PSU and a $60 PSU with extra $140 for more toys...

Anyways, K'pelli--since everyone will recommend Antec or Enermax, I'm gonna be unorthodox. Why don't you have a look at this. Not very popular (but it should be, IMO), but it's great unit, plenty of power, very stable. Good price too.

So it definitely appears that I will need a larger PSU... (my wife's pissed about the price tag of the upgrades already LOL) The bitch is that I need a new case as well. I could use my existing case, but it would have to be chopped and it's overall a pain in the ass to work with.

I just picked up one of these http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...148-004&depa=1 and I love it. Changed out their color combo with some black sleeving and a couple of orange led fans. Green sleeving, blue fans, gold chassis, and yellow window didn't quite work for me. As far as stability, I've seen the 3 volt rail drop .03v running prime 95 and thats it.

Here's what ya'll have to look at.
"IF" this PSU only lasts 5 years, that's only 40bux a year to have the best.
Anything longer and it makes it cheaper yet.
A crummy PSU will cost you components that are also worth money.
What is the value of Stability, O/Cablity, etc...Sure the initial outlay is greater, but in the long run if you plan to have a PC for the next 5 years, your PSU problems will be nill.
Add up the prices of the PSUs that you have bought or used recently and apply that toward the cost...you'll see that it isn't that much difference. I didn't opt for this PSU because I have got money to burn, it's because I don't have money to burn.

As far as that aspire 520 that weighs in at 4.5lbs? why do you think it has to have 3 fans anyway?
My 510 weighs in at over 8lbs and uses 1 silent running 80mm fan, because that's all it needs.
Check out the site at www.pcpowerandcooling.com read up on the facts before you make your desicion, you can't afford not to...

zennzzo got a point about the fan the heatsink inside them look like plastic, i wish i could get the power & cooloing psu, but i'm trying to get rid of my student loan right now so i barely stretched to get my tagan even though they are moderately priced and F'ing heavy as i sold af few on ebay and the trip to the post office nearly broke my back! the heatsinks inside are massive filled out the whole interior of the case

Kokopelli, go with an Enermax Noisetaker 470w or higher. Rock solid.

Heh, wish I could afford that. Unfortunately this project is being funded by a student loan, (funds put to good use if I do say so myself ) so while there is some freedom, I do have to meet a cap.

But you guys have provided some good info. Think I might go for that Aspire 520 that some one posted on n'egg. Now I just have to get a better case that I can introduce to good friend named, Mr. Dremmel.

Actually Zennz, I didn't read what he had to say. I saw that he rated it at 5 stars and then I read the reviews that Newegg linked. The reviews didn't really test the wattage of the supply though. Seems to be working well for me but I am interested in any negative reports on this thing.
