Default Is my hard drive doomed?

today when I opened my MP3 folder to move a few songs around my storage drive started to make the normal scanning noises, but then it will go into a loop and make the same sound over and over while slowing my system to a crawl (almost locked).

After about 2 minutes the drive stops looping and i can select files, but if I try to move anything, it goes into this loop again, almost locks up for a few mins, then will either give me a Cyclic Redundancy Check error. (dosent make sens to me because they are all valid, working files that I could move around fine before.)
or will just sit while looping then give me an estimated copy time of an hour or 2, then 50 mins, then it just moves the files 2 minutes or so later.

Is my 80 gig IBM deathstar doomed?
Everyhing worked fine before...
I just want to be able to move all my stuff off of it now incase it dies.
Specs are
Win XP
c:\ western digi 60 gig
storage drive is 1 1/2 year old IBM deskstar

id start backing up if i was you. The cyclic redunancy error has popped up before on this site, and i thik it is to do with the fact that the head or platter in the hard drive isnt moving according to plan.

if things get worse i recomend the old freezer bag and freezing trick, then dumping as much as you can out of it.

all in all a replacment would be advisable - sounds like heat has got to it.

in that case sounds like a single platter is having a problem or the head is having trouble reaching an area of the disk

suggest you run norton diskdoctor and see if it picks up anyhting
