Exclamation Just installed 2 new ide cdrw/dvd drives,,comp acting REALLY SLOW

This happened to me before... i hooked up a cd rom drive,,, and all of a sudden it takes windows probably 45 seconds longer to boot,,, and it takes 25 more seconds to log on (i know its not that bad,,, but i'm a computer perfectionist,, i'm sure a lot of u are )...

and when i unhook the drives,,, boom computer boots really fast (as it should with 3.4ghz and 1gb ram)...

anyone know what might be causing this??? its really frustrating me.....

thanks

Just out of curiosity, what do you have the jumpers on the cdrw/dvd drives set as? Make sure one is master and one is slave.

EDIT: Also are they on the same IDE cable or different cables?

they are both on one cable,,, one is set to master,,,the other slave,,, maybe i should try a diff cable,,, or maybe i need to change some settings in my bios............. very frustrating when ur comp slows down for no significant reason haha....

You may try putting them on seperate controllers/channels. I was thinking that if they were that could have been the cause of the slow down if you didn't have the IDE channels set to NONE in their properties in the controll pannel.

On the advanced tab of the IDE channel's properties they have two settings, auto detect and none. If they are set to autodetect on the second device where there is none, it will seach for it and take a little bit longer to say there is none.

I know for a fact that cdroms slow down your startup, but not by 40 seconds!! about 15 or 20 seconds, Try messing around in your bios.

Edit: if you think this is fast you should see after supper when everyone isnt at work or school.

I ran into a problem once where the computer would boot slow with the cdroms on the primary ide channel but I doubt thats your problem. Since you have an sata drive put both your cdroms on seperate channels.

i'm starting to get confused now,,,

i unhooked the cd roms,,, still really slow booting/ performance,,, hooked up a diff psu to make sure the comp was getting enough voltage (since i sleeved my butterfly some of the atx connectors aren't too well fit in)...

i'm calling msi tech support to figure out y since i flashed the bios i've been getting new hardware messagaes saying "base system device detected.. please install etc.".. that could be it,,

and i'm gonna mess around with the bios more..

thanks..

wow that dont sound too good - i dont know if this differs at all but have you tried them in secondary IDE instead of primary - im sure primary as the upper hand on performance and priority, thats how ive always built anyway.

I had almost the exact same problem with my Abit mobo. I turned on bus mastering and now I boot in the blink of an eye. Also I think I set my optical drives to cable select.

k just found out i got a virus (cause my old hdd broke i just got a new one 2 weeks ago,, and stupidly my virus software wasn't one of the things i installed first.),, removed it and now everything is pretty much back to normal..

i guess it was just out of coincedience that i installed the 2 drives and got the virus.

it was w32:Jeefo btw...

thanks for all the help..

It seems you have fixed the problem already but you may also want to check your BIOS for settings that you can tweak for faster boots. I know for the Shuttle AN35/N Ultra mobo there is a setting in the Advanced BIOS features to enable Quick POST. You may try searching for settings such as that for even faster booting.
