Default HDD (Hard Drive Dilemma)

So my neighbor decided to throw out his Dell. Ofcourse when he leaves, I pick it up and take it home. It's a Dimension 2400. I check how the inside looks. Then I plug it in, and booting in normal mode doesn't work. The Windows loading page keeps loading forever...but booting in safe mode works. It has XP. Also, the 2 optical drives I cannot use because the flap things that come out are missing. It's a WD 40 GB.

I want to format this hard drive so my brother can have a computer to use. How can I go about doing this? Swapping this HD with mine won't work, I get a BSOD. I'm a noob and a half. How can I rid this HD of its contents and have a fresh XP install?

set the new hdd as a slave and stick it in your rig. then boot into windows and use winxp to format it. after that's done, set it back to master and stick it in your bro's rig and install new copy of xp. bingo bango

Default create a boot disk

if you create a boot disk you can format it from the old trashed box. You will need to get an optical drive in that old computer. So you can install an new os.
