Unhappy Hard Drive Deep 6'ed?

Well, my well intenstioned g/f was going to back up all the data on her second hard drive, bought the dvd for it, and then XP locks up writing to her drive and now XP doesnt see it. Told her to remove from the system and ill look at it, but im wondering what i should do, she said she didnt hear any noise coming from it, so should i freeze it, and try to see if i can get data off it, they try something else? Will freezing it hurt the drive if its not REALLY dying? Just wondering best 1,2,3 course of action to take to try to salvage as much data as possible.
Thanks

so she tried writing the data from the second hard drive to her dvd-r/+r? and then xp locked up and doesn't recognize the second hard drive? from what i read that's what it seems like. but i'm not sure if i read it wrong.

have you tried going into the bios and seeing if it's still found there? or tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cables? i find that sometimes works with a few of my optical drives

well no, she was just coping some last files to the drive before she started, then it locked, she turned it off, i told her to try unpluggin the cables, and all that, doesnt seem to help, bios, from what she says, sees it. Ran Maxtors drive program and it ran it and then came back and said the drive is dying.. but i dont know how much to trust that..

First off, remove the drive and check it on a different computer.

well that was my plan, stick it in my computer cause i have space if any of the data is recoverable, but should i freeze it to do that, or start with FAT/MFT recovery?

Yeah so the bios sees it no prob. but nothing will access it, no noise, almost sounds silent but it seems to have the vibrations of a running HD.. i tried some "hd fixer" programs but nothing can read the drive? Is it time to freeze it or is there something else i can do?

Never had anything like this happen (thankfully), so I cannot speak from experience. Here's a couple of links for ya, though:

if it's still under warranty, set it up as a slave drive on a second computer, copy everything, then RMA the drive. Maxtor is cool with RMAs, they usually send you back something better than what you sent to them. Got a slow 60 upgraded to a fast 80 that way
