Default LinkSys Network Hub dead?

I have an old 10MB/s LinkSys Network hub with 5 ports.

When I plug into the hub on any of the ports, there is no activity except on port 5

I have plugged 2 different PC's into Port 5 and get activity, but none of the other ports appear to be working, including the Uplink port.

I have run the network wizard several times, and checked all the connections, tried to go over everything carefully..and nothing is working across the network..it was fine the day before.

This thing is from 1998, and has had some pretty heavy use, think it's in it's final death stage?

Hmm... time to see what best buy has in stock..might be time to upgrade..

EDIT: Found this Cool Blue LinkSys 5 port for 39$..Looks kinda Pimp, especially next to my old Beige one! or they have this one by Netgear for 39$ also..Not so good looking and never heard of them..

I'm suprised you never heard of netgear. I purchased the linksys switch last week and it works great. It even has auto sensing ports

Netgear is a very well known company - so is Linksys. I went with what I could get local - easier to return that way.......ended up with a Microsoft wireless router from OfficeMax - been the best router I owned yet (have owned Linky and Dlink).

As far as I know, Netgear is more known for their wireless routers/hubs then the wired ones....but they are a reputable company from what I hear.

The first or last port should be the uplink, so only 4 of the 5 ports should be working anyway.

Best Buy had a bunch of wireless set ups that were very tempting for the same money..
But then I would have had to buy a few wireless cards...adds up quick!

So 42$ later..I have a replacement

Went with the LinkSys..Looks even better from a 3/4 view, and is about half the size of the old one! I was like 'Whaa? I got the wrong Damn one!"

Looks like a kids toy, fits in the palm of my hand! but 100MB/s sure beats 10MB/s when drag and dropping those huge game files

You got the right one and it does a good job. I was suprised too by how small it was. The pics were a little misleading.

Hmm... what is a Texas instruments 1394 Host Controller? it seems to be missing a driver.

I don't have my motherboard drivers here, and can't seem to connect to the net..no floppy drives either

I was realy looking for an excuse to get rid of that old hub anyways..It still may be good though..odd only port 5 worked

Here is a list of drivers for my Mobo..I allready have the Nvidia ForceWare drivers, appearantly what I need is not included..

I know virtually nothing about networks..just enough to hook up a few rigs and game..When I run into problems I am pretty much up a paddle without a creek

LOL..Yeah..I forgot I had a Firewire card in this rig for my web cam!

Removed the card, and made sure all hardware was working properly, I can at least drag and drop files between computers now, just cant get on the net..

I tried every combo on the network wizard, the main computer connected to the net not sharing with me has been pointed out by a friend..

I realy need to take a Networking class next semester!

What Im thinking is that your network cable is a 10mbps cable, and your router even though its set to autosensing will pick it up but your network card wont.

Go to your Network Connection, then to your local area connection and right click. Under were it says connect using: and names your network card, click configure. Then at the top click on the advanced tab, then look under that tab for Link Speed/Duplex Mode. Turn it down to 10 Full or 10 Half, that should solve your problem.

Basically the reason you have to do this is because of your network cable, it was wired for 10mbps. If you want to use 100mbps then you need to buy new network cable.

Thanks for trying RED, but I found a Chipset driver on the server was missing when I went to windows update.

All is working fine now!
