I've had two drieves die on me this way. You have three options:
1. Lens is dirty. Clean.
2. Laser got decalibrated. Not sure if you can fix this. Anyone?
3. The drive just died. Replace.

Try blowing some compressed air inside the drive - Ive fixed a DVD player like that before. Dust settles on the lens and "blinds" the laser - could fix it. Otherwise time for new stuff - damn I like new stuff.

Nice technique--never thought of this before. Nonetheless, it's kinda hit-or-miss, so if this does not work, you may want to take the drive apart and clean the lens directly (cuetip+some alcohol). This needs to be done VERY carefully, though.

If the lens was decalibrated, all you need to do is adjust the pot on the side of the laser if it's like a Playstation laser. This usually fixes it for a while, but won't fix all your problems so try them all.

a make would be good m8 - some makes are not the strongest thing around. you could try and clean the lens, but obviously be careful when replacing the covers. Otherwise, CDrw drives are cheap these days - have a look at Ebuyer for more details
