Default Getting a floppy disk error when I boot up...

A few weeks ago I had a floppy drive in my comp and it was workin fine, then I swapped it to test out a friends floppy drive, and when I put his in I got an error on startup that said something like:

(40) Error: Floppy Disks Fail

Press F1 to continue.

So I said oh well, and put my floppy drive back in, but now Im getting the very same error with my floppy drive too! The 3 1/2 Floppy A: shows up in my computer, and the led light on the front of the drive is a solid green. Any ideas what may be causing this? Thanks

Sounds like you have your floppy cable upside down. I don't know why they can't make them like the HDD cable that only goes on one way. But flip it over, and give that a shot.

Check the connectors. Looks like you plugged the data cable upside down.

Check the power connector as well, while you're at it (red cable should be on the right, yellow on the left). But if you reversed the power cable, the floppy is already fried.

EDIT: ... and Slider beat me to it.

Here's a general rule of thumb with floppies. In MOST cases the red wire on the power connector has to meet up with the red wire on the ribbon cable.

The other rule of thumb is if the light is lit solid then you have the cable on backwards....

Lightbulb BIOS and the other connector

Also check the BIOS and make sure IT thinks the floppy drive is what it ought to be.

Also, if your floopy cable has two connectors on it, try the other one.

Also, floppy cable may be bad.

Ive had all these thing cause problems at boot on my 'lab' machine [expendable 120Mhz PackardBell]
