Default Sandisk E250, MTP mode, and SD cards

So I saw a special today when buying a new heatsink-- a 2G MicroSD card for 10 bucks. Figuring I was using 3/4 of the 2Gb in my Sansa E250, I figured I'd install it.

Now, it shows up fine in MSC mode (acts like a disc drive). But in MTP mode (acts like a MP3 player, WMP knows what to do with it ), it still says "1.8Gb total". The card cannot be seen at all, not even by navigating to "My Computer-> Portable devices-> Sandisk E250"

Now, the expandability of the device is of limited use if "synching" the device means switching it to the MSC mode, dragging files over, and then switching back to MTP mode (I prefer MTP mode because it doesn't spend a full minute recalculating its database on boot).

I tried Rockbox, and while cute to play Doom on an E250, the UI felt much less polished.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one w/ a Sansa e250 ... Actually, I have the e250Rhapsody ... get yours off W00t? Rockbox didn't thrill me either. Glad they spent all that time giving us functionality, but a better UI would have won me over instead of the annoyance of an all-ASCII interface.

The card reader is a known issue for the Sansa ... and really, the way you're doing it (if it works) might be the only way to use the full 4 gigs in MTP mode. I stuck to MSC mode, but as you know, I have the annoying "refreshing database" delay every time I turn it on.

It doesn't work that way. It seems to have to regenerate the database every time you pop the card-- presumably the logic is "we can't just make a JBOD array of the card and the flash, because the card might disappear".

I have the non-Rhapsody 250, which I bought locally 12/2006 IIRC. Paid just south of a Franklin, because it was after-christmas sales; it's held up well. It actually has a hair trapped under the screen now
