| I had a black out earlier today and i noticed my desktop and my HTPC and Canon printer wont turn on. Each of them are connected to different powerboards (all with circuit breakers) whilst other equipment seems to have not been affected. Do you think the 3 are all trash now??? ![]() | ||

| I would be surprised if one blackout had taken all three out, but it could happen. Have you tried flipping the switch on the back of your power supply off, then holding the power button to drain any remaining power from the motherboard to see if that would help? I have seen that work before in a few instances. If that doesn't work you might try a power supply tester or voltmeter to see if just the power supply got fried. | ||

Could be, but don't panic yet ![]() Be sure it's not the sockets that are faulty by substituting something that you know is working (a lamp or something), if the socket is ok, then try a different, known good power lead ... also check someone hasn't been "helpful" & flipped any switches on the backs of your kit to off. If the socket & lead/fuse are good, then yep, it's time to try different psus & hope that's as far as the damage went. I'm keeping my fingers (metaphorically) crossed for you. edit - damned lag ![]() GLO, you mentioned circuit breakers ... I could be misunderstanding you here, but are you under the impression that they are there to protect you equipment? They're there to protect your house wiring from faulty equipment, not to protect your equipment from mains spikes & whathaveyou ... on a surge protector is going to do that. I hope I'm not coming across as too preachy ... I don't have any surge protectors either ... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Yes a blackout could do that, and try everything Johnny suggested before buying new ones. Any sudden change in the voltage going through the PSU while is is on *could* cause damage. This includes surges and dips (or blackouts). Of course this is much less likely if the system is off or you have it connected to a good ups. | ||

| And if your gear was hooked to power strips/surge suppressors - it may be them that went bad. Once plugged the boss's personal heater into an APC power strip and everything died but it was just the power strip that went. And as I recall, the light on the strip said it was working which caused me great confusion temporarily. Apparently, everything south of that LED was dead but the LED survived???!!! -MF | ||
