Default Stupid Ol' Network

I've got a problem getting my wife's laptop to see the rest of my network.

Everybody is running XP home.

DHCP from router assigns an IP.

My machine can ping her laptop. Her laptop can ping my desktop.

Workgroup names are the same. In fact when she changed the name of her laptop I could see the change.

But I can't access her shares and she can't see shares on the network.

All machines on the network act like my desktop so it isn't just my machine.

Turned off laptop firewall - didn't help.

Does XP limit the number of members of a workgroup? Whats the 'Pro' in XP Pro get you?

Where else to look?

Do you have simple file sharing turned on? Sometimes that will screw up a file share.

Xp -Pro gets you a few things, but most of all domain usage, but thats not your issue, make sure you have file shareing on and also make sure you get nwlinl/ipx/spx protocol installed and also make sure you have her shares shared(ouch that looks bad when typed ), thats off the top of my head, 1st cup of coffee so far

Wink Re: Stupid Ol' Network

So I banged my head against the wall for a few hours reading tech suport forum after tech support forum.

And the winner is:
PChuck's Network: Address Resolution on the LAN

I finally found [using ipconfig /all] that the laptop had a node type of peer-to-peer. As I am not running a WINS server, this causes name resolution problems.

How it got changed I dunno ...

Hack the registry and it's fixed.

Kudos for those who tried.
