Question Help with a friends laptop

I need help for a friends laptop. She has a dell inspirion laptop that the ethernet jack is not working properly. It loses connection very easily. I don't see anything wrong with the jack and have tried different cables with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could fix it, outside of buying a whole new motherboard? Thanks.

Is it an issue of the physical connection coming undone or is it that the network adapter is losing the connection? If the physical connection is not the problem then you may want to try reinstalling the ethernet drivers and or the network manager that you are using.

No it's the physical connection itself. It seems the cable doesn't click all the way in like it should.

It will click like it's in all the way but if you give it just a little tug it loses connection without the cable comming unplugged

Well not really sure on what to do about a physical connection issue if it is on the laptops end. Have you tried just cleaning it out? Also you said you have already tried other cables so I assume that they work and "click into" other computers just fine. The connector on the laptop end may just be worn down and I am not real sure that there is too much you can do about that.

if you absolutely cant get that port working, you might want to look into a PCMCIA based 10/100 ethernet adapter, they are cheap, effective, and save you from buying a new motherboard...

...like THIS one...
