Default Any Cisco folks? Need help entering rommon

I have a Cisco 2501 router I bought on the FleaBay. Is seems it has a password. Need that changed for my CCNA lab work. (Note: I own the router, and have physical access to it, nothing funny going on...)

I have it hooked up via the console port on the router to the serial port of my PC, with a rollover cable (RJ45 to Db9). The instructions are to hit CTL+Break during the router booting, using Hyper Terminal. I can't get it to work. All I get are 'Exception Jump to zero at 0xEE8 (PC)' Sometimes I get 0x31A8840.

Using Hyper Terminal, I can get in at the EXEC mode. That is all I can get into.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

First use putty. Its so much nicer than hyperterminal.

Second, normally (ironically these are the exact routers that we use in class) pressing enter at the start of the connection, bam your at "user mode" notice the ">" symbol.
Code:
router>en

User Access Verification

Password:
Router#
Normally a password there is just a password, secret (the password you would need to get to user mode is harder to delete.

Now if you can get to user mode, a nice

Code:
router>reload
always will clear everything, with the secret password is applicable.

Let me know what password your dealing with. A manual v-ram chip flash would be required to change it if secret is enabled.

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure what password I am dealing with. The Putty is a great program, thanks for that info S1ugh. But nothing works. Perhaps a screenshot will help.

Thanks again for the info.

Here is what I am trying. Press CTL+Break during the first 60 seconds of the ruoter bootingl (while hooked up to the Putty/Hyper Term). This should put me in rommon. Then I enter confreg 0x2142, restart the router, and it should boot into rommon. Should be able to o into EXEC without a password at this point copy startup-config running-config.

Should give you an idea of how I am trying to do this. Willing to try other methods.

Thanks again.

Alot of ebay sold routers have a password "cisco", try that.

If that does not work, take a look at this guide from cisco.

Password Recovery Procedure for the Cisco 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, AccessPro, 7000 (RP), AGS, IGS, and STS-10x - Cisco Systems

Gotta love Cisco sometimes, I have tried the method exactly like I was supposed to in the Cisco lab book, no worky. Your link from Cisco's website worked perfectly. Reminds me of a teacher I had a while backs favorate saying, 'There is the right way, the wrong way, and there is the Cisco way...'

No problem, I had a pile of links from helping my friend unlock his, but like I said his password was "cisco".

Last quarter I had a networking class with routersim, an awesome app. that simulates all the routers codes and commands. I'm sure if your taking a CCNA class you've used the same app once (I Hope).

If you have any other question, just ask, I did pretty good in that class.

Actually building my own little Frankenstein lab. Got my Cisco 2501 router, just ordered a Cisco 1912 switch from the FleaBay. I need one more router to more or less complete my stuff. Would love one of the 2600's or better but don't have the cash for one.

My teacher said there is a deal somewhere on Cisco's site for good price on a Cisco 800 router. One that could actually be used.

Getting my own stuff because the folks in my class annoy me. They just talk too much. I would rather crank up some tunes, play around with the stuff than listen to them complain...

Thanks again for the help s1ugh34d.

LOL, our school handed out 2600 series routers to make space, we have sooo many router laying around it isn't funny.

Sad part is, they all didnt have serial ports, the adapters wern't in them, and we can't use the ones left in class until they find the serial card box.

My buddy picked up one and got the card on fleabay, bam hes got his very own 2600.

Mt sugestion, find a 12.4 torrent or something and upgrade that firmware dude.
