Question Testing a hard drive or 50

So I got a server with no hard drives and a SCSI backplane.

And I got a box of scrubbed drives [no OS] some are good some are bad.

How do I tell?

I've got no drive utilities.

Don't even have an OS to use to format the drives.

I don't suppose there is some sort of shareware you pros have used in the past that would fit on a floppy and tell me if a drive was good or bad.

If I used Active KILLDISK to zero out the drive and it ran no problems could I assume the drive was good? Cause I already got that ... it just takes so long...

are they old & small HD -60 GB?

you could use the boot disk of win98 & use scandisk or fdisk then format your hd's it's gona tell you if your hd is no good you'll see bad sector\closter

if all format done & no bad sector\cluster then they are ok to use

the other solution is to boot linux out of a cd & format or check your drives in linux?
not sure if this can be done i dont know linux all that much but maybe it can be done?

are the drives SCSI ?? or pata ??

If they're SCSI , and you have an SCSI card ( PCI slot ) just hook them up and run a format on them one by one . All you'd need to go faster is a SCSI cable with 6+ connectors then you could hook 6 drives up at one time .

with PATA do the same , but you'll be limited to 2 or 4 drive depending on the PCI card.

You can use this also HD Tune
