| Apex Techie Wannabe | Just built a new PC and it will load into Windows fine, however 30 seconds to a minute after loading windows it just turns itself off, no warning or anything, just loses all power. Sometimes it will lose power before it gets into Windows at all, but most of the time it makes it. I tested the power supply with another computer and it works perfectly fine so it's not the power supply. Any ideas what could be causing this? Ultra X-Finity PSU, it was part of the barebones kit with the CPU/MB/Case. It lasts significantly longer without shutting off when in safe mode. Remounted CPU cooler, same issue, do you think it might be a poor connection between CPU and it's cooler? Edit: Ended up it was the CPU Cooler after all, one corner of it kept coming loose after reinstalling it, had a broken connector at that corner. Replaced it and the problem is gone. | things that are suspect to me... - ram voltage, probably needs to be 2.0+ volts and a lot of BIOS's like to set them to 1.8 by default....bad news....and will cause restarts. - heatsink may not be properly mounted, though this is kind of doubtful since they are pretty foolproof, and modern intel cpu's step themselves down in the event they overheat, so meh. - PSU: i have never liked Ultra's PSU's, i have worked on systems that used them and even testing fine in one system is never a guarantee that they will work fine in another. as far as i'm concerned, they are cheap, unreliable, flashy toys posing as something you put in a computer case, and i wouldnt trust a set of cold cathodes to them. and i care exactly -0- if anyone here agrees with me or not. Ultras are trash. i wouldn't be saying that unless i had enough experience with them to make that harsh assessment. this thread explains it all, take it or leave it | ||
