Default MS Fingerprint Reader

Ok, Here is the deal, A friend of mine runs a Non-profit group that provides free ID cards for children. He has upgraded the ID software to Asure ID Express and he wants to add a fingerprint to the ID, but the software maker wants $800 for a print reader.

My question is - can anyone find a way to adapt the $30 MS fingerprint reader to work as a scanner that we can use to input a fingerprint to the ID software.

Thanks

I would venture the guess no.

Maybe you can just, take an ink print of their fingers, and scan those on a regular scanner.

Fingerprint readers store your print data as an image, there are various pieces of software out there to dump these images. I'll look around a bit. I found some info when I was trying to get the scanner on my laptop to work under linux. There is an SDK here You might want to poke around on sourceforge. I'm about 100% sure it can be done.

EDIT.

You will have to do some reading but i found this and this.

xanth pretty much already said it, but my laptop's fingerprint reader (why does it have a fingerprint reader?) doesn't really work in linux. However, from what I've read it recognizes it and if you find the right spot you'll find a ton of image files. No idea about the details though, so this is a pretty worthless post
