Default Challenge: 1 IDE HD MB Port, 1 IDE HD & 1 SATA HD

Hello all,

I have a mobo w/ 1 IDE HD port only. Just got a new 180G WD Raptor HD, and am scratching my head trying to figure out how to run it and my existing IDE Maxtor HD. I have a groovy IDE /SATA adaptor which allows me to plug the Raptor into the mobo, but I can't seem to be able to link the Maxtor to the Raptor.

Put another way, I guess I'm trying to daisy-chain them: mobo IDE port->Raptor->Maxtor. I'd like the Raptor to be my primary HD.

Any suggestions?

On the back of the maxtor there should be a jumper you'll need to move the jumper so that the drive is set as a slave. There should be a diagram on the hard drive itself.

Hope that helps

How about a cheap controller card that adds another ide port and 4 sata ports?

I thought all the new Raptor drives were sata. And I don't remember a 180GB Raptor
model either. But that really doesn't matter. Unless your Optical drives are sata you'll
be needing that ide port for them. I will have to recommend you buying another ide to
sata adapter or a new controller card. I wouldn't buy a cheap one though. I would pick
one of these Promise controllers :-)

You could also get an external enclosure and attach it via USB, Firewire, etc...

I just ordered a Promise PCI controller card (2 SATA 1 ATA ports).

Question: Should I connect just my SATA HD to it, and leave my IDE ATA HD connected to the mobo, or should I connect it to the new controller card too?

I would connect both HD's to the new controller and the Opticals to the mobo.
The promise controller should be faster than the on-board controller. Don't
forget to download the newest drivers for the controller.

Will do.

I'm surprised the PCI controller would be faster than the mobo port. Thanks for the quick reply, and the driver download reminder.
