Default Well, this sux!

My friend gave me his old pc (specs below) that had a working 60GB WD HD. I reinstalled Win98 SE on it and it worked fine. I put another drive in as master and this drive in as slave. I used partition magic to, well, repartition it and reformat it. It kept bailing out about 1/3 way thru. I finally used fdisk to partition it. I got it formatted and this is what it said when finished.

57,225.38 Total Disk Space
57,225.34 in Bad Sectors
0.04 available on disk

WTF Happened?

Oh, well. At least I'm not out any money.

500mhz PIII
64mb ram
8mb agp graphics card (toast)
nic(10 or 10/100? shrug)
56k modem
17" monitor
soundblaster sound card
printer
usb scanner
win98SE install disk

Well, it is possible that the MFT on the drive is corrupt. To be honest I am not sure that a partition will wipe that out. I have seen that before. I would try a "low level" format. Some motherboards have the feature built in to do it.

I had that happen wiht a 2.1 Gig drive a few days ago. Low level format fixed it.

That, Lord Dragon, is why I just chuckle and shake my head at those who constantly cry "The Floppy is Dead!!!" and who ridicule people that haven't thrown theirs away yet. I don't necessarily keep a floppy drive installed in my rigs, but a drive and cable are always nearby for situations like that.

I've had some luck a shareware program called partition zapper ... couldn't hurt. I did leave the floppy out of this last rig >>sigh<< and would ya beleive that I still have a 5.25 drive in the closet?

Yes, I just started to leave floppys out of my rigs. I happen to have a floppy sitting here, I just didn't want to open the case for a one shot deal.

The Data Lifeguard tools were corrupt. I ran scandisk and it showed no errors. I removed the other hd from the system and started the win98 se install anyway. It installed and didn't give me any problems about the drive.

I can't figure out what happened but I got a free computer from the deal.
