Unhappy SOHO fileserver lockups

My fileserver is running Windows 2000 Professional. I'm about to format and install Windows XP Professional (good or bad idea?)

I just put in a new hard drive, as Office Max had a deal that I just couldn't pass up. So, I was copying some Images and stuff to the new drive, and I get a hard lockup, no response, and I can't do anything except turn it off, and turn it back on.

Here's the hardware:

Asus A7V133
1.4 Athlon running at 1.05 (100 fsb)
576 MB PC100
250 Watt Antec Power Suppy (could this be the problem?)
32x CD Rom drive
52x CD-RW Drive
3 Western Digital 40GB 7200 RPM drives

So, it works great until I start copying oh...say...18 gigs of stuff to the new hard drive. Any ideas? Should I just copy smaller amounts of data at a time?

Windows 2000 shows that it will take about 2 minutes to copy all of the data...(I know this is wrong) And it gets to the end of the progress bar, and the minutes go up to HUGE numbers like...3678343, and then the files will continue to copy. Either the files will complete copying flawlessly, or it will lockup.

Any Ideas?

You're copying too much data at one time. You're just using the clipboard, right? (copy/paste between windows)

Bad idea for transferring that much data. Use robocopy. If you need a copy I'll email it to you - it's freeware.

Robocopy will do files up to 2GB in size at a time. (i.e. database files) If you have 18GB worth of data to transfer, and it's not in one file, then robocopy will get the job done MUCH more quickly than the clipboard. Low overhead too.

The other issue is your power supply. It's likely overloaded with 3 hard drives on there, especially with all of them running at the same time - copying data. That's likely why you got the hard lock-up. You'll want to either disconnect one drive, or upgrade your power supply.

Id first try copying smaller amounts. I think 18 gigs is a little to much to copy at one time. Id try 1 or 2 gigs at a time.

Hehe...that's what I thought. I staggered it to two images at a time, but that still wasn't enough. So, I'll go ahead and just cut it down to one image. Thanks...

also, I'll be getting a new power supply soon enough. So that should eliminate any other problem.
