| I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this, so if you know of a better place for me to post this particular thread after reading it, let me know... Anyway, I have two computers just recently connected to the internet via cable modem. The two computers are networked into a lynksys 4-port switch router and the cable modem is connected to the router directly. I am trying to establish an online server for large file transfers using a server program called BulletproofFTP, which I have used before and works pretty well. But I don't have any experience with routers before getting this one just a few days ago. I think I can manage to set everything up myself, but I can't find a good guide anywhere, and everything I have tried seems to have failed. I CAN locally connect to the server through an FTP client program, but only locally. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or how to fix this or where else to go for this kind of information? PM me if you like, 'cause I'm desperate to fix this now and willing to do whatever I can in return. THANKS! | ||

| I'm pretty sure what you need to do is just open the port for the ftp server. start > run > cmd > ipconfig find out the last # of ur local IP on the router go into the router settings goto advanced > port forwarding put in the port for ur ftp example 21 - 21 check check then put in ur IP and click enable goto apply and that should do it ![]() (thats how I got DCC over MIRC to work atleast) | ||

| Nope. Tried that. But thanks. Has anyone actually had this problem themsevles, say when setting up a game server or something? By the way, I'm running windows XP pro on both pc's, and it seems like every other online program can access the internet except for the server program. | ||

| well it sounds to me that the ports just need to be opened to allow incoming activity.. quick search on google brought up this http://pctechforums.com/modules.php?name=FTP | ||

| Tried DMZ on my local IP number for this particular computer, but that didn't do anything either. Any other ideas? Or does anyone know a good resource online to figure out this kind of thing? All of the network-related websites I've found are too basic or too specific to other problems. THANKS! | ||

| I restarted the router and the pc...but I should renew the IP's as well? You mean DHCP release & renew? I'm afraid that might make the problem worse, but if you think I should give that a shot, or if I'm not talking about the same thing you are, I'll try whatever you suggest next... TekXoid, how come it always seems to be you that comes out in the end and saves the day? THANKS, man! I'll restart everything again and wait to hear if I should release/renew DHCP | ||

Yes I mean DHCP release and renew. Start>Run>Type "CMD" without quotes>Type "ipconfig/release" without quotes>Type "ipconfig/renew" without quotes. I really prefer D-Link routers though, as they provide the public IP directly to the system that has DmZ enabled. See screenshot of my DmZ enabled system on a D-Link router for example.
Thats my job... ![]() | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Maybe I should use something else to transfer files? Surely someone has suggestions for that. I have absolutely no idea why I can't set up this server right, but I'm giving up and blaming it on the router. If anyone else can reccomend a good alternative (And don't say PC Anywhere), I'd be in debt to you! THANKS! | ||

| Linksys sucks, half the network-related service calls I get are thanks to those bastards and there lousy firmware/interface. I would get a D-Link router such as the excellent DI-604 which is $27 after rebate. $37@Newegg.Com | ||
