Exclamation Soyo SY-P4X400 issue

ok. here it is, I have a Radeon 9700 Pro 3D video card. I also have a SY-P4X400 Dragon Ultra Platinum motherboard. My computer will often freeze up at different times of the day. It can be seconds after a cold boot-up, or 8 hrs+ of constant use. There are no specific programs that it locks up from, even freezes on windows xp home edition environment.

I've tried updating BIOS, formatting HD, updating drivers, etc. nothing seems to be working. Could this mean the video card is NOT compatible with my motherboard?

I have a 120gb HD, video card, 6 usb ports (only 2 being used), dvd-rw, cd-rw, 3 1/4 floppy and a 350watt Enermax PSU.

Could my psu be too small for this type of hardware?

Please help for this problem has been plaguing me for months.

It may be your psu. What processor are you running, and do you have it overclocked?

sorry guys, hes a friend of mine, he has a 2.5ghz p4 williamette 533mhz, and no, he isnt overclocking, and i seriously doubt his dram timings are off either considering everything in his BIOS is at relaxed settings (default or below)...

it sounds very much like a flaky power supply to me, since it worked fine for 6 months and then started doing this out of the blue, any help is greatly appreciated on this...

lol as long as I can have your shoe, a stick of gum then I'm sold.

How expensive is a psu say 450watt going for?

and is there any other possibility?

is it @ all possible that my video card in fact isn't compatible with my mother board?

Probably not. I'd shoot for the PSU.

Look at 80-120 for a psu. Don't go cheap. I run an Enermax 431W activePFC psu. I need it, cause I'm gonna power extensive lighting mods.

If you have another vid card swap it out and see if it does the same thing. PSU is a good bet, but don't count out memory.

I'm in the process of doing a memtest86 check (www.memtest86.com) to test for bad sectors in my ram, and test cpu and board. so far so good but takes a looong time.

I love those tags, hey slider I'm reading through all the OC posts, do you know off hand how much overclocking is safe?

I have a 2.53ghz Intel, and my board can handle 3.02ghz, so can I safely OC to 3ghz?

First of all, I know nothing of Intel overclocking. I'm not really sure what you mean by safe. If you're refering to your processor, there is a limit to how much you can increase the core voltage, but I have no idea what it is for Intel. Just make sure you keep it cool.

bump....

with that intel cpu, your big issue will be your DRAM frequency limitation (i THINK), or for that matter, just simply your cpu limitation, you might wanna get your first problem out of the way first tho
