Default Bending capacitors required ***

Hey,
I just finished assembling my new system and am unhappy with the performance of the stock AMD fan. I've read many comments on this board and other reviews to know that Thermalright makes the best heatsink available. My question to you is....

According to this page, in order to install the SLK-900-U on my MoBo(A7N8X - Deluxe), I have to bend capacitors, has anybody done this before???

It says that it requires severe bending......

Details:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
ASUS A7N8X - Deluxe
1 Gig Corsair XMS Dual
GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
160 Gig HD

I would get the SLK-800-U since it is compatible with your board without having to do any modifications, but if you are really set on the 900 I would get teh SLK-900A so that you can just use the stress clip to attach it and not have to worry about5 beding anything.

I wouldnt mind bending capacitors to mount such a bad-ass heatsink, but the SLK-900A is a resonable alternative to the bolt-mount SLK-900U.
Do beware of moving the system with the "A" installed, as a risk of damaging the motherboard is much higher than with the "U".
Not to mention the downforce and mounting strength on the processor die is much much higher with the "U" than with the "U".

You can pick up either HS for $40-$50 online but I would get the SLK-900U and just bend the capacitors as necessary.
If you want to just save a few bucks and forget bending any capacitors just get the SLK-800U to save you the trouble.

Edited for multiple typos.

With the 800 u you dont need to bed the capacitors, that is why i mentioned it. Although you may beedto lap it.

I don't plan on going with an "A" just because I can have a stronger/better mount for the same price with a "U". And I read somewhere that you only sacrifice about 2-3°C between the 800 and 900.

V4mpiro: What do you mean by lapping???

EDIT: : : I'll check out the capacitors tonight and see how hard its goign to be to bend them......

If push comes to shove, I could always dremel a lil of the heatsink fins......or would that not be good?

I just got that mobo and mounted the 800U. I got the 800U instead of the 900U for the same reason.

Lapping is a procedure which gives the bottom of the heatsink a near-mirror finish, you use wet high-grit sandpaper, in varying levels of grit rating until you acheive this mirror finish.
The payoff of this procedure is better heatsink thermal dissipation, resulting in lower CPU temperatures.
All SLK-XXX series come with a very smooth finish but for some people that just isnt enough.

Excellent Lapping Guide @ OCB

The 900 u has not been exceedingly well received due to its size and weight.

Most users are willing to sacrifice a couple degrees, and get the second best heatsink in the world (800) for less money, less weight, and a smaller footprint.

We lapped the HSF that came with my friends 3.06HT. If anyone's seen those before they're pretty badass for a stock heatsink but the finish is pretty ****ty. Its allmost mirror now, and its currently running a Pentium MMX 166mhz 2.8v at 350Mhz 3.4V. Severe voltage tweaking, but we have like 6 of em laying around between us so burnout isnt a big concern.

h33ga, I'd just go with the 800U. I dont know about you guys, but i wouldnt even consider a heatsink that might rip off my zif socket. thats just ****ing stupid IMO.

So what grit of sandpaper would be the best to start off with and what woudl be the best to finish with?

I just need a general idea so that I can find out what types to buy

-----------------------

putwig: smaller footprint??? How would that benefit?

-----------------------

Well, so far I'm thinking of goign with the 800-U. Do you think it woudl benefit if I did a little custom ducting mod to a 92mm fan that pulled air from outside the case??? the little guy in my head keeps telling me that a plexiglass duct with some LED's would be sweet! Do you all agree???

Go with the SLK-800U. A ducting mod would be an effective way to channel a fresh supply of air directly to your HSF and you should acheive better CPU temperatures with a duct in place. If you can, do it.

Now I'm all excited.

All I have to do now I wait to get my heat sink.....

you think a 92mm vantec tornado would be the best route (I know the 92mm won't fit on the 800-U, remember, I'm going to make a duct)?

Any other ideas that anyone has to make it look/perform awesome?

EDIT : : : I just wanted to thank everyone for their help, its greatly appreciated!!

Actually we just used some 3M 600Grit wedsanding paper we had. worked great. a higher grit would probably bring alot more whine to it though. but it still beats the $hit out of the horrible intel finish.

Smaller footprint just means it is smaller, so you won't need to bend capacitors.
