Default Finding another mobo

At first I decided on getting a DFI LanParty KT400A motherboard, but after the $150 price tag, I was wondering if there were any other mobo's that you would suggest to me on what I should get (for a lower price).

I'm going to run atleast an Athlon XP 2600+ and 512MB DDR. Any ideas? Prices and links are welcome.

i suggest the Asus a7n8x deluxe.

it's $129ish at www.newegg.com

other than that i'd look for the nforce2 chipset it's the best thing going.

EDIT: The board is loaded with features.

yea, that's one of the main reasons on why I didn't want the other mobo. It has a VIA chip...

Many folks around here have had various levels of success using the Abit NF7-S, myself included.

Don, you don't want the Via chipset? Via's chipset blows the kt400 and kt600 out the water on all benchmarks. Why wouldn't you want it?

I read some article that the VIA chipset in that motherboard isn't too good? I'm not even sure what the chipset does. :\ Excuse my newbness.

Pretty sure you meant NForce2 chipsets blow the kt400 and kt600 out of the water. The 400 and 600 are via chipsets.

Very simply, the chipset makes the motherboard. The chipset coordinates data transfer between the CPU, ram, PCI, and AGP.

Via has a long history of making AMD chipsets, and for a long while they were the only major player.

That ended with the NForce2 chipset, which is what the smart money would be buying at this time.

The abit is a good board but I have to recommend the epox 8ard+. Its only 85 at newegg last I checked. Its a great board and was top of the nforce2 boards until the abit came along. Its still in a close second though in my opinion.

Outcast the i've read some good things about the epox 8rda+ especially as far as overclocking goes. For a little more epox also has the 8rda3+ and I believe it's the same bios as 8rda+ but it's a true 400mhz fsb.
Don, I haven't had any experience with a refurb but it most likely will be sold as is and have no warranty, maybe a 30 day from newegg but that's it.

the 8rda3+ uses the nforce2 400 ultra chipset, which is the newest and fastest version.

it is also a good board.

my main reason for suggesting the a7n8x-deluxe is that i have one and know it's a solid board with a ton of features.

I would either get the Abit NF7-S v2.0, or the Gigabyte 7N400 Pro; it is the only nforce2 board that I know of that has 4 ram slots for future upgradibility.
