Unhappy AMD or Intel?

Hi,

I am going to be building a new pc soon... So i need to know whether i should go for AMD cpu or intel cpu... My budget is $1200 and... on top of that for GFX Nvidia or ATI... I like all the companies... what matters is the performance.. if you use these can u please tell me about thir performance.. as in general (cd burning, excecutions of applications, and Gaming) and overclocking abilities.

I'm gonna say AMD for two reasons-cost, and gaming power. I can break down the architectural reason, but it's been proven that the AMD is better for gaming. Cost is self-explanatory-save a couple of bucks, get better parts elsewhere.

ATI/Nvidia? You're on your own there. I'm an ATI fan, with an Nvidia card. ATI has better 2D, and their offerings are right now the best for your dollar, once again imho. Nvidia has cost, and upward scalability on their side. Best bet? Find a friend or two and play with their rigs. Find what YOU want and are happy with, and go for it. And post here when you do.

I love my Intel but in terms of bang-to-buck you cannot beat AMD.
If you have too much money and your dying to spend 2x or 3x more then you would going AMD for the same performance then get an intel. If you don't have much money and/or have a brain get an Athlon

I was damn stupid to spend $170 for my 2.4GHz Intel when my Athlon 2100+ overclocked meets my Intel in performance, and the athlon cost me $90.

As for graphics, ATI all the way, they simply rule the world.

yeah if you want the very best... go with the top of the line intel... but since you budget is 1200 then you obviousley cant afford intels best. buy an athlon 1700+ with a good HSF... that will get you better than AMD's best and right up there next to Intel's...

I'd throw my money at another amd and ati system in a heartbeat...

Taken from another post of mine... prices have changed slightly, but its still ballparking it... and god knows you can take this and fiddle with it all you want.

You can't go wrong with the system above, and for less than a G.
Maybe up the RAM to some golden dragon by Geil, but otherwise it looks sound to me...of course you'll need to manage some sort of cooling!!
...good job outcast.

Definitely AMD. They make great solid processors that really hold up to Intel. Matter of fact dollar for dollar, they blow Intel away. 200 bucks of AMD goes much farther than 200 Intel bucks.

What about overclocking abilities... because i've heard from couple of my friends that AMD has heating issues and requires a TOP quality fan (which i have no problem with) but it WOULD heat up my entire system and to tell you the truth i dont like liquid cooling.

d00d. they do not require a TOP quality fan , hell the stock fan the chips come with will work cept, you wont be able to hear anything else in the room, AMD's do run warmer than Intel and especially more so whe overclocke however, there are more than enough adequate air cooling solutions around here. PS on my other comp is a XP 2200 overcloked 300 mhz, runs full load 24/7 currently as I speak it is at 103 F on 100% load with a vantec aeroflow.

hrm, I thought I read somewhere that the new AMD barton's run cooler now than the p4's..Correct me if Im wrong. hell, my tbred 2000+ runs around 38C (ambient 22C) full load, fan rpm at medium speed (~3800RPM, goes up and over 6000RPM)

AMD all the way, as kayin and the rest say..and outcastgoodpostimfollowingzennzzo

I have always loved AMD from the begging. Owned 8-9 AMD Processors since 1992 or whatever, lost count its been so many. Owned 1 Intel based computer, it sucked I hated it and thankfully it died. . I will always be an AMD Fan. You'll see me first inline for the Athlon 64's. I do find AMD based system's to be better at gaming, and Intel based systems which I have used, to be better at applications.

My $0.02

I think this is pretty self-explanatory...

The only Intels I have are a 200 on a network rig and a 366 Slot 1 which does work better on applications and in Half-Life, runs better with aid of a 32 MB PCI video card.

My AMD lineup: Socket 7: 300, two 450's, and a 500. Socket 462 is an 850 and a 1.3.

I am the only one in my family with an AMD in his system. And by default, and in actuality, I have the fastest computer, even my dad's Pentium 4 2.0 GHz can't keep up

those 400FSB P4's were soooooo slow it wasn't even funny. My friend has a 1.6GHz P4 Custom Built and my god I swear my 850mhz Slot-A Athlon is better than it.

lol Intels run cooler because of their aluminum construction, it's patented and that's the only thing they can hold over AMD's head.

Oh, and I ran FreshDiagnose, which has benchmarking software on it, see the results below

MWIPS: P4 1.6 GHz => 1,059
MWIPS: Duron 1.3GHz => 2,559

MDIPS: P4 1.6 GHz => 3,083
MDIPS: Duron 1.3GHz => 3,751

If processors were cars I would have a jet-powered Lamborghini Diablo VT with fifteen turbochargers and warp drive on it and my dad would have a stock Ford Mustang; makes a lot of noise and has a lot of power but the top end is just not there. And of course, it has no mods whatsoever, it's a Dell, go figure.

I had a AMD T-Bird 1.2 and it was faster than my freinds 1.6 p4 400FSB it was sad, I could load games faster and everything was pathetic, he called support many times eventually they gave him a 2.0 Ghz.

But now I got a Intel p4 2.8C which I truly love , had to switch to the dark side

this is like the great ford versus chevy debate, i run an amd, and a intel i have a XP2500 running stock and i have a socket 423 1.7 w/ the IHS removed (lowered temps a little, IHS now resides on my keychain) i paid retail for the amd and the intel was given to me.....if i had to make the choice? buy the amd over the intel...just like i would rather push a ford then drive a chevy....(that should get something started, but i hope not...)
