Unhappy Abit Nf7-s V2 Problems..

I bought this board on reccomdendations of a few m8's
I had an Asus A7v333 before this and had no problems (except for it being a tad slow)

PC Specs
XP 1700
2 sticks of TwinMoss 512mb Pc 2700 Cas2 DDR
60 gig maxtor 5400 / 133 hard drive
Gainward ti 4200 126mb Golden Sample with Zalmann heat block
Windows 2k Pro.

last week on my asus board I weas getting 10,800 marks on 3dmark 2001.

this week with new board (abit) I cannot get it to boot unless I turn the cpu settings down to
1300
236 MhZ
clock 119
Multiplier 11

anything higher than this and the pc just hangs on boot.

Help please b4 I go mad

Are you putting the RAM in the same channel or are you trying to run it in dual channel mode?

Are you running with the processor set to "User Defined" or "by spd" in the BIOS? Did you try clearing the CMOS?

I tried the ram both ways

@FoeHammer Tried the processor as User Defined

How exactly will it not boot? Does it show some or any part of the POST? Is there absolutely nothing on the screen when you boot? Do you hear the system come on? Any diagnostic LED's?

it will only boot as far as the following
first off you will see on top left corner all graph card details on black screen
then it will show cpu stuff etc. and just hang there

Is your heatsink correctly mounted using thermal paste onto your athlon? If possible remove the mainboard from the computer and look at it from the side to see if it is unevenly on top of the core. Athlons can fry in seconds without a properly mounted cooling solution.

If it is mounted correctly...Does the POST show memory info? or freeze before that? Possibly your mainboard/BIOS has an issue with the ram you are using. Try other ram and/or a BIOS update.

set the cpu to the non-user defined option and try again...

I set mine to user defined and it hung my system as well...

tried other ram at all different settings and apparently it really does not affect the booting .
it seems to boot fine on lots of memory settings
the problem is when I bringfsb above 236

any way
I am going to take it back out and return it to the store that I bought it from and get a different make
I really dont have the time for all this messing about just to get it running.
It would be a different story if I was tryin to overclock it or something.

any reccomendations on a new one ??

What exactly are you trying to raise "above 236"?

The abit NF7-S ver 2.0 is a killer mainboard! I built a system with it just lack week. Could not have gone any smoother!

I would say you are either doing something wrong, or your board is defective.

To clarify, with your current hardware your soft menu settings should be:

multiplier - 11
fsb - 133
ram to fsb ratio - 4:4
ram timings - spd

You should not be setting anything to "236"

@ Putwig
fsb should be 133 I know
but I can only get to 119 as anything over that and the systm will either not boot or will crash
ermmm is my xp1700 not a 266 Mhz or is that fsb ??

No, you are technically correct in saying it is a 266 MHz FSB chip.

However, this is a longstanding maketing gimmick dating back four years.

At least now with DDR ram it is a partial truth ......

Never the less, the setting is 133, not 266.

Is your 1700+ a palomino, thoroughbred A, or thoroughbred B?

What is the Vcore set at?

Maybe you just got a clunker, it happens. I've had nothing but good luck with my NF7-S. Currently running at 216/434 at stock voltages without a hitch. You might want to check the 100-133/166 jumper to see if it's in the right position, or missing altogether. 1700 runs at 133/266 by default.

@ Putwig
not sure which one it is m8
is there a way of telling without having to take it out ?

@ AntiM
where exactly is this jumper m8 ?
I would love to get to the bottom of this rather than have to take it out for replacement

CPU-Z will tell you your revision number without pulling you processor.

The pin is located just behind the adb header on the upper left hand side of the mobo. The jumper should be on the pins closest to the adb header. I doubt that would be your problem though. It should come set correctly when you buy it.
