Default Mobile Sempron speed

I recently got a Compaq laptop which is sufficient for my needs but still very slow for my taste. The Mobile Sempron 2800+ seemed to be very slow and now i think i might have found the answer. I was browsing PC Wizard looking at the system specs and realized that instead of running at 1600 Mhz like it should.. It was running at 800!!!

I wondered if maybe it was running this way because of a heat issue. Maybe it underclocked itself so it wouldnt over heat and shutdown and it does seem a little hot. It idles at 54C at 800Mhz. Im not sure i want to know how hot it will be at 1600Mhz. Also.. As near as i can tell, the CPU fan is not working or is just not on. PC Wizard shows it at 0 RPM's and i cant hear anything .

If someone could shed a little light on this situation for me... that would be awesome.

I have the same problem. A bios update didnt fix it either . I did fix it by adjusting the muliplier (or FSB) a bit, but when we changed mobos it had the same problem. (again) The Multiplier(or FSB) was locked, so I couldnt change it.

Are you sure its not just throttling down, use CPU-Z to see what speed its at when your running something demanding through it.

You may not be able to measure fan speeds with most software as most laptop motherboards don't support it, but not being able to here it is a problem I would open up the case and actually take a look.

Thanks - your right it is just throttling down, that didnt even cross my mind. Probably the reason for the extreme slowness is that i only have 256MB of ram.

Yeah, I've run XP on systems with less than 256mb and its awful, really you need 512 to run XP properly; if your planning on running anything demanding boost it up to 756 or 1024, you can never have enough memory.
