We actually have several generations of HP/Compaq boxes at my work.

The oldest are PIII-450 Compaq Deskpros; I suspect they are the sort you could rotate a drive cage around and pass as a desktop. They look like real ATX.

The middle-age ones are little dinky Celeron (1200MHz?) Compaqs, and the newest are AXP/Sempron (3000+) HPs... both of which are probably their "business desktop not particularly expandable" range. They appear to be microATX from behind, but I can't say on the internal layout.

Of course, we also have a few newer boxes (both Compaq and HP badges) which are clearly NOT ATX or any clear derivative; they're like those old propriatery cases where the slots are on riser cards.

what do you mean by mATX?...does that mean micro-atx? and a micro atx can be installed in an ATX case right? for example an aspire x-Discovery
what im doing is gut and swap my hp compaq(the one pictured above into an Aspire X-Discovery case)

Indeed! In my current HTPC project I use a Micro ATX (mATX) board which fits nicely in my
desktop case. That case COULD have accomodated a full ATX board but I really did not need
that.... I'll just need one pci/pci express 1x slot & maybe the pci express 16x slot...
And there is a LOT of space left...

You can find the project here;
http://forums.pcapex.com/project_wor..._not_lost.html

As you can see from the pictures my board resembles your board in size... and since mine is
mATX, yours must be that as well...

I'm going to say that is an ATX...........NOT an mATX..............

Measure it with a tape measurer..............If it's 9.5 x 9.5, then it's a mATX, If it's 12 x 9.5 then it's ATX.

HighPerf is right , measuring is the best way , but thats definatly an mATX board by looking at the AGP and PCI slots and the back panel , its too squished to be ATX
