Default northbridge heatsink

I ordered an Epox 8rda3+ that should be here in a couple days. I read a couple reviews on it today and they say the heatsink on nforce2 chip gets real hot. With that this board suppose to be good for oc'ing. Should i be concerned with this passive cooling. If so is there a fan i can mount to the heatsink already on the chip maybe with a lil modification or is it easy enough to pull off that heatsink so i can put on a iceberg 4 or something of the like?

You should be able to remove the heatsink very easily by pinching the plastic pins on the underside of the mobo. Also add new thermal compound on it, most mobo manufacturers skimp on this, usually putting a dot in the middle that isnt enough to spread across the whole chip.

That's coo, I thought they would use that thermal adhesive and it would be a pain to get off without pulling the chip off

that board has the nforce2 400 ultra, it's a newer version and runs slightly cooler than the original, but if your looking into adjusting the hsf, you might also want to consider putting one on the southbridge also it often causes OC problems at high FSB speeds.

yea actually in one of the reviews i read they took the big heatsink off the northbridge and made it fit the southbridge, but the southbridge got nowhere near as hot as the nforce2 did prior to their lil mod. So passive cooling would be sufficient on the southbridge. I guess i'll just wait till I get the board and see what kind of temps and stability I get.
Congrats on the post count Buzz, are you gonna do what you did when you hit post# 420(hehe j/k)

i wouldn't start messing with the sinks until you have a good reason too, the warranty people don't like that much, plus it might work fins and give your a great OC.
