Default slow Windows load after BIOS flash

just flashed my BIOS to a newer version as i was told it would fix a few issues, most importantly a slow boot time after the installation of 2 new Seagate SATA300 HDD's.......

after resetting for the 2nd time after loading optimised defaults the pc basically wouldn't start..... tried a few times and because of error messages :

PXE-E61 : Media test failure, test cable
PXE-M0F : Exiting PXE Rom

i unplugged all usb devices, both dvd-roms and my backup IDE hard drive,,,,,,,,,,, it started up a treat, and significantly quicker than i am used to..... started plugging everything back in and using different combinations, DVD's plugged in, backup HDD not plugged in etc etc

long story short, with everything plugged in i get the slow load times (and strangely the sounds breaks up when windows loads) but with everything EXCEPT the IDE HDD it loads quickly and no sound breakup

any ideas what this could be ? have i explained it enough to get an opinion ??

soemthing i haven't set properly in BIOS ??

fyi the 2 dvd drives are on one IDE plug, the HDD is on the other

much appreciated !!

cheers

Your sure you've set the hard disks up properly, one as a master and one as a slave. If you haven't then the computer will be getting confused and maybe trying to use both to load?

Thats just a wild guess at what could be happening.

you need to go into bios and reconfigure it the way it was before the flash... or reinstall windows.

the best thing to do in these situations is an old trick that i use when trouble shooting PC's at work... break it down to parade rest, just the core components, and one by one start and reboot the machine component by component, it will allow you to…

1) clean your gear
2) identify your problem item
3) check to make sure everything is properly jumpered
4) check connections
5) possibly located a faulty item

I hope that helps!

my RAID drives are setup correctly so I'm fairly sure it's not that.....

the slow load up is from when the Windows XP screen with the blue bars ends, and the initial "Welcome" screen comes up..... its around 15 seconds when the IDE backup drive is plugged in

I have re configured everything in the BIOS to how it was before the flash...... so its not that.....

USB devices are slowing down your system... thats what i suggested the break down for so you can figure out which one is slowing down your system

Make sure the jumper settings are correct on the IDE drives. Cable Select slows things down, as well as incorrect boot orders in the BIOS.

I would venture to guess that something is wrong with the IDE device. Maybe the cable?

the drive is set as Master and is the only thing in that IDE cable.... also i tried another cable but that made no difference

as well as slow loading the drive gives very poor performance, copying and accessing.... it slows the whole system down basically

honestly sounds like it might just be a bad drive or something... wait you said that it was fine on another computer didn't you (processing)

... ... ... ... ... got it

i bet that it is your HDD controller. on that MoBo.. not much that you can do about that but... if you know that the i would try to pair a DVD and the HDD together or something or get a USB encloser for your IDE drive sounds like that channel of or the whole controler is going on your Mobo.. just the rambeling thoughts of a repair tech!

the problems only started after I installed the 2 new SATA300 drives.... previous to that the IDE backup drive, and Windows loading times, were fine....
therefore I don't think there is a fault with the mobo's IDE controller...... it must be down to the new SATA300 drives ?

think i'll try another IDE drive I have lying around to see if the drive itself is at fault ??

OK so i reread the entire thread in hopes to find a better way to resolve the issue... and i saw the above. DUH bro error codes are the best, so this allows us to know quite a few things, it has nothing to do with your controller, your USB devices, it also lets us know that its either a bad HDD, an unformated HDD, or a bad cable! so check those things and let us know!
