Question Boot problems with MSI KT3 Ultra

ok, Last night i was bored and pissed of with my CPU overheating so decided to strip down my PC and replace the HSF. Put it all back together but now when i try to boot it up it runs for about 5 seconds and then turns itself off. Have checked all connections several times so it aint that and i aint getting any beeps to tell me that something aint installed properly.

Anyone with any ideas? Its a MSI KT3 Ultra MB, with athlon XP 1900+ CPU, Radeon 9700 pro gfx card and currently 256MB RAM.

Do you have a fan plugged in to the CPU fan header?

Did it smell like burnt silicon, burnt plastic, burnt solder, or burnt money? I'm willing to bet it smells like burnt money. I know that smell well.

Yank the CPU, plug in the HSF, turn on the comp and see if everything starts spinning.

pull the board from the box and check to see what burnt.if everything look good, try to boot it while it's out.mine recently decided to stop booting before loading the bios after 6 months of operation.pulled it and everything booted fine.reinstaled it and it's still going.have no idea what happened.
since you replaced the hsf, look at the under-side of the processor.if thermal shut-down was enabled, and the hsf wasn't sitting square on the die,the board will shut down.
unfortunatly,it sounds as if something is fried.

pulled everything, tried again, got the same burning smell but couldnt see any visible burning. It still didnt work so i just took the easy option and went out and got a new MB. Been meaning to get one anyway, the MSI has always been dodgy.

it sounds like your processor over heated, it can easily over heat in less than 10 seconds. if the heat sink wasnt mounted right that could very easily happen
