Default New to the dark side. Need some advice

I think I am gainfully employed again, so instead of selling this stuff, I think I will make it a folder for Team Fred G. I have an Intel P4 3.28GHZ/1Mgb cach/800 Mgz FSB L4218551 CPU and 2x512 Samsung DDR2 ram. Not the best RAM, but I am one Motherboard, a PSU away from another folding machine!

I would like to get a motherboard with onboard sound and video, that will perhaps o/c a little. If I am not mistaken, this is a socket 775 CPU.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Winter is comming, so maybe with your help, I will have another spaceheater folding for PimpRig!

And for the record, I know nothing about Intel chips, all my computers are AMD, so I am a little lost on the specs and boards.

Thanks for any and all help!

E

I am realitively new to system building, but all of those (6 or 7 methinks...) that i have built have been intel. from what you say, i am confused about the proc. 3.28 is certainly not a stock speed, it would be either 3.2 or 3.4, and i also cant tell if it is socket 478 or Lg775. post a pic, or maybe one of the more expirenced here can tell by your info. as far as motherboards go...i think that brands that make really exceptional AMD boards will also make good intel boards, so go with what you know. i like gigabyte, but if you like asus, abit, DFI, etc, just look at their intel boards and you should be pretty safe

The info about the CPU is what is on the back of the CPU. This is scrapped form a Dell going to the dumster!

How do I identify this chip ecackly, so I can get a board for it?

i looked at one of the procs i have around here, and intel uses a 0 with a line through it that looks a lot like an 8, so my guess is that its a 3.2 ghz model. (nice work, thats faster than mine!) as for the socket, could you post a pic of the socket itself in the dell? (i dont know enough about intel model numbers)

Simple diagnostic:
If the CPU has pins on the bottom side, it's a socket 478, If there are no pins, it's an LGA775 jobbie
I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a board to fit the spec either

OMG. Duh. (sorry fred_G, my mind escaped me for a minute there with the whole pins/no pins thing) yeah, assuming you live in the states, check out what i think i can safely say is at least a respected site round here, Newegg. (you probably already shop there, dont you? ) they have an awesome search function for sorting by those goodies that thrasher talked of. you could find a model there, then check back with the link masta to see if you could get a better price.

Well, looks like I am only halfway employed, so I sold most of it to HighTechRedNeck. I will eventually cross over to the dark side for one compruter, and see how it goes. My laptop is a Pentium, so who knows!

Thanks for all the help and advice. One thing I know, it is easier to match up an AMD CPU to a motherboard. Intel just makes too many different chips!

Have a good one! and thanks again.
