Default New Build: Sock939/SLI Setup

Ok, so i've been debating the last couple months. Of when i shold make the much needed change to AMD. Current setup is a MSI 865PE NEO2 with a P4 Prescott 3.0@3.45, with a XFX 6800GT running core speed of 450, memory at 1100. System runs great. No FPS drop at all. But i've wanted to change back to AMD for awhile now. I've got a setup in mind, and wanted opinions.

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
XFX PVT70FUNDE Geforce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 1GHz FSB Socket 939

I've already got RAM, and I plan to just swap out my current board, proc, and video card with this new one. RAM is Corsair XMS <

Just tell me what you think. I've read a ton of reviews on the board, and heard its rock solid. With TONS of goodies in the BIOS. Proc, im not so sure of. And the video card, i am pretty sure which is what i want.

Plan is right now, to just use the one card, and later one, get another and then go SLi. if any of you have heard of any new tech thats coming out. And think i should hold off for a little longer. Please speak up.

Well I would hold cause your old rig is plenty powerful enough for Bf2 and Source...and there is not need for a Pc that powerful if you are not going to game or benchmark.

But your options you have selected are pretty smoking. If you want SLI get the DFI SLI-DR board. Costs more but you get more SATA and do not need a pencil mod which is risking as is. I would not go SLI unless you gave "me" another card or I got one for cheap. One 7800 is plenty and then some.

The ram is a waste of money. To much bling bling and not enough bang for your buck. Talking straight to a reg like yourself look into OCZ PC-3200 Gold. You can read a http://reviews.pcapex.com/memory/ocz_pc3200_gold_ed_bh5_ram.php . Tested with my board and I can say it kicks ass.

Also a good PS is nice, and a new monitor is one of the best upgrades people can get but overlook. Whats the points of all that power and not a decent screen to view it. The Dell monitor that everyone seems to have, the 21 and now the 23 are sweet. I recommend looking for a deal on PR soon when one happens again.

Ok, ill re-itterate.

I already have my main rig completly built right now. Ive got the RAM and is in use right now, and my PSU is a OCZ PowerStream 520W.

A couple reasons I wanna switch is so that i can raise the head on the OC, right now im kinda hitting a cap. And i wanna go higher.

I wanna hit the highest OC i can, ive already got a water setup and i would just need to get a new block, which aint nothing. And i wanna bench that sucker to no tomorrow.

Not using alot of sata in the gaming rig, as i just got two raptors in raid (stripe) to get load and play times faster. and the only other drive in my rig is another storage drive i put stuff onto when i go Lanning.

I think you should skip the DFI. It does have alot of options but I know a few of them have had problems with the board and the bios going bad. Spikeshot has had both the ASUS and DFI 939 boards. He acheived the same clocks on both boards. If you have tccd and dont need the extra dfi mem voltz just get the ASUS Sli board. As for the processor they all clock about the same speed so why spend the money on a 4000?

Its a pretty meaty setup, but you may well want to wait until AMD launches their new socket design, M2.

Yeah, I know its a long wait, something like last quarter of '06, but socket 939 hardware will hopefully see a nice decrease in price. If your prepared to wait that long, you could save yourself a nice little bundle, and still have a very high spec machine. Hell, im running an OC'ed (2.5Ghz) skt. 939 3500+ Winchester A64, and it does me absolutely fine. I certainly won't be upgrading for at least 2 years.

Also, ATi's new GPU is due for release shortly, which will also hopefully see a nice price drop on the current high range ATi cards e.g. the X850 XT PE.

Then of course theres the new A64 X2s to be thought of. AMD still recommend the FX-57 as the top of the line chip for gaming use. Currently thats because the vast majority of games are single threaded, thus a top of the range single threaded enthusiast chip like the FX-57 will perform better than the current dual core chips in most, if not all, games and 3D benchmarks.

Give it time though, and developers will start releasing games and mainstream applications to take advantage of true multithreading chips, which will of course give massive performance increases and hopefully take gaming to a whole new level of realism and detail. AMD, and probably Intel, eventually intend to move every chip design over to dual core, or even tri or quad core, depending on how successful the new manufacturing processes are.

To sum up, if I were going to spend that amount of money of a machine, and I already had a machine of decent spec like you current P4 rig, id wait until the hottest, newest generation of gear comes out before opening my wallet.

Damn man. I have the 4400. If you have the vapochill I woulda just gotten the 4400 because even though its 200mhz less, you can still overclock it to about the same speeds.

I was looking at the 4400 but when I went to order they were out of stock. I see there now back in stock. I'm sure I'll be more than happy with the 4800.
