AMD is saying Intel is a monopoly so says AMD because they offer inccentives to manufacturers to use intel chips.

Umm... I don't believe any modern country allows monopolies. They're bad for economic growth and innovation.

And yes, AMD is saying that Intel used illegal business practices to corner the market and establish a monopoly. They're saying that Intel stole business from AMD.
Ok, that was kinda cyclical, but, that's what's shakin.

The only good monopoly is the board game. All others just seek to push all the little guys out of business so that they can inflate their own profits.

Heh good philosophey Velo

All is explained HERE.

Basically Intel were keeping AMD on a tight leash...it being the only real competition in the x86 market. This has been going on since the erly days of the 386/486 era...and Intel has always got away with threatening companies who use AMD or Rival chips using various bullying methods.

AMD has now got the market strength and stmaina to finally turn around and get back at Intel for their unfair and inapropriate business functioning. They are also getting a huge backing from various large companies including Dell and HP.

EDIT - DR3W - No monopolies mean the entire market for that particular sector (or at least 60/70%) is their own. Competiton has a very hard time getting any kind of leaway, and tend to fold in following various attempts to gain market share. In the computer industry it tends to act rather diferently to any other market sector due to the ocnstraints of software/hardware compatibility. Because Windows for example has been around since time and memorial, they have compatibility across the board, and its the world renowned standard for PCs to have. Linux is there yes...as is MacOS (as we know its x86 compatible)...but people rarely venture into alternative except us geeks and some hardy server providers. The same goes with Intel and AMD but as we can see, Intel has been using acts of unfair play towards the PC manufacturers.

From studying history, I think AMD is suing Intel due to them being or attempting to be a vertical monopoly. I'll back AMD on this one.

Yes I do agree. Intel does have money, but I think they still dominate some of the home pc market. I beleave Most people dont know about AMD, and most of them are forced to use intel's processors because Dell mostly sells intel cpu's. Now if I were Dell, I would offer the customer both CPUs so that it would be easier for the customer to chose on what system to buy, and of course explain the diffferencee between each. But intel has probably bribed Dell and other companys into selling their products. We all know each CPU has its advantages and disadvantages, Intel being good at tasks such as word processing...etc,AMD being good at gaming, etc, with both not being MUCH behind each other, Proves that by dell selling intel there was a unfair advantage towards AMD (IMHO that is)

I just wish more people knew there was another choice out there besides intel. People probably do know, but because the computers dont come prebuilt, they are scared to build their own. The Customer would also not know what to do if a problem were to arise, thus PC shops were invented. They sell (around here anyway) AMD Cpu's and Just that.

Not to start an AMD vs Intel war...but Ive always wondered...why do people like intel (as much as AMD users love their CPU's)if the benchmarks prove intel lags AMD? Id like to know...

Yes, its about trying to create a monopoly but some of you guys had it half right, it is also about Intel using those incentives to lock AMD out of the market but making it so companies DONT have a choice which CPU they buy. Its Intel or its the guillutine!

I know alot of people who don't know what an "AMD" is.

I was talking to my dads friend, he got a new HP(media center edition) and asks be what my specs where, "how big is your pentium intel" was his words. After I explained I had an "Overclocked AMD 2400+" I completly lost him, i tryed to explain there was other brands than intel(pentium size ) but he couldnt grasp the concept that there is anything out there thats not a pentium4...

damnit!...some people

I was trying to tell my Dad the difference between Celeron and Pentium 4... That was crazy enough...

Then I got a AMD 64 3000+ imagine trying to explain the 64bit, and then the whole mhz/fsb/cache and all that stuff...
