Default Cpu Underclocking. Wtf!?

When I built this rig, it was running it's Athlon XP 2200+ at the proper 1.8gHz. Now I open up CPU-Z and it tells me that the multiplier is 13.5, like it should be, but instead of 266mHz, the bus is running at 200mHz! This makes it run at 1.3gHz! I looked in the bios and it says that it's running at the propper 266x13.5.

Could this be CPU damage due to heat? It's been running quite hot lately.

Check the bios and see if "thermal throttling" is turned on. This feature will under-clock your CPU if it gets too hot. If your rig's been running hot, it's probably time to do some work on airflow/cooling

Exactly how hot is "quite hot"?

What motherboard? I have been having a similar BIOS-related problem with my A7N8X-E Dlx.

Lol that's my board!

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

I'm idling aroud 58 degrees celcius. I shut 'er down and let her rest, and when I turned her back on the clock speed was back to normal. But I turned on Asus POST reporter and it said "CPU fan failed". I open up the case, but the HS fan was actualy running. Slowly, thoutgh. 1918 rpm to be exact. I guess this is the cause for my terrible heat problems? How do I get my fan to spin faster?

There might be a jumper on the Motherboard you need to change to make it run at DDR266 (133Bios) Otherwise just set it manually!

What HS are you using, what is your cooling setup (fans, placement, etc), and what are your case temps?

Glacialtech Silentbreeze 642 III, running at 1,918 rpm (capable of 17,000 rpm)
Mobo at 29C.
Proc at 58C idle.
Also have one case fan blowing in at the front and a dual-fan PSU blowing out the back.

But that's not the problem. When I boot the Asus POST reporter says "CPU fan fail". And that's why the fan is moving so slowly and that's the reason my temps are so high. I think the reason it says "CPU fan fail" is that the CPU fan only has two wires, wich means it doesn't support the CPU speed indicator. I guess I could just splice the end off of the CPU fan lead and attatch it to a +12V lead, but I don't want to risk it yet.

When you have a fan running that slowly with some boards, it is reported as a failure, maybe that is the problems, anyone else wanna back me up on this theory?

If this is you fan and HS, you need a fan that pushes more CFM (stock pushes 25 CFM....not nearly enough).
What i'm getting at is that while you may indeed have a prob with the fan and the monitoring software, your temps are still HIGH, and they need to come down....what does your CPU temp read in the BIOS?

Same thing as ASProbe.

I can't believe this HS could cool an 1800+ Palomino at 30C idle, but cools a 2200+ Thorton at 58C idle. That's just not right.

http://www.phired.co.uk/hardware/cfans/6fans-8.php

On that page the fan on this HS was running at an average of 3,425 rpm, and it cooled a 2500+ OVERCLOCKED to 3200+ at an awsome 24C.

Hey man...the company's specs on the stock fan are: 1,700 RPM @ 25.5 CFM....try using a higher CFM 80MM fan and see what your CPU temps are.

Nope, if he had the cash for that, he wouldn't be running a 2200+.

St8ic: I suggest you get a new sink...the TR SI-97 is pretty inexpensive and has excellent performance.
Hell, my current CPU temp with it is 44C, all fans on low, (7v) with an overclock and 1.95vCore.

For more info, you can check out my review of it in the Member Reviews forum.

i mean no disrespect whatsoever here, but Thermal Throttling, for an AMD system at least, doesent underclock anything because of heat, it just sets the clock speed to a lower setting while in suspend to ram mode...nothing more...that is not your problem...alot of people get confused about that.....and agp aperture....that one is my favorite....

I have a GlacialTech heatsink, it's not too bad, but I wouldn't cool a Socket A with it. It sits on my P3 1ghz machine.

Does it seem as if quite a lot of people have been having various issues with that board lately, anybody?
