Default ABit NF7 Bios Fan

I've figured out why my system lags so badly after putting a heavy workload on it like playing games or running alot of resource eating apps.

My bios fan on my NF7 is dead as a doornail. I've heard from some others that the NF7 boards are notorious for having the bios fan die, so i was wondering.

Has anyone else had the same problem with this board, and should I replce the fan by ordering a new one from ABit or is it probably just going to go out again and should i just get a standard replcement fan?

I have the same board, but my chipset fan is still working fine (I think?). My friend, Spud, had the same problem as you. I would suggest getting an aftermarket chipset cooling solution. It's probably cheaper than getting the exact replacement from abit, anyway.

The ThermalRight NB-1C will fit your mobo, but is a tad expensive.
Probably worth the price though I would imagine.

Everytime I start my PC up I can here the chipset fan vibrating away. They tend too use these cheap bushing bearing type fans vs the good old ball bearing setup. This happened on my geforce 2 TI card, It would vibrate so bad that it was barely spinning.

After all the horror stories I have heard about the NF7-S chipset cooler, if I were ever to own one that would be the first mod I would accomplish is switching to a more reliable chipset cooler.

Make sure there is no dust in the fan. I had a little bit of dust in there once and it caused the fan to stop spinning. If you try to move the fan blade with your finger, does it start spinning? Sometimes these fans needed a little "jump start" once in a while.

ABIT seems to have this problem a lot. I remember the early models of the IC7 series had that problem. And then they switched over to a chipset cooler that is supposed to be more reliable and I haven't had any problems since.

mine died on me, so i found a cheap, viable replacement for like $7 on excaliberpc.com, was the Vantec Iceberq aluminum chipset and cpu cooling kit, worked like a dream, and included lots of other heatsinks for the southbridge, and miscellaneous other crap....

LINK

EDIT: it is worth noting, however, that an overheating chipset usually does not result in lag, rather, it results in locking up, erratic and strange system behavior, rebooting, or Carrot Top....

Blue or gold. Both are only a couple of bucks and should cool pretty well.

The Zalmans and the Vantec should work quite well. I have the Thermalright NB-1C and I love it, but I think it is a bit of overkill(No pun intended) unless you plan on OCing. If that is the case, get the Thermalright.

I had to replace mine as well. Very pleased with the Thermalright NB-1, but it is a tad whiny. I put a rheo on it.

I have also used the Copper Vantec cooler in the past (the copper version of the red one Fuelman posted) with great results.

My cooler failed also, killed the board. RMA'd it and my new NF7-S came with a slightly diffrent cooler and its worked perfect so far.

Tagging along, with the same issue:

-opinions on if a 40mm fan ziptied over the dead fan/sink will work as:
a) a stopgap, temporary solution
b) will work as a permanent solution, or
c) You're crazy, order a new sink and wait for the mail.
